Kaladin then has to spend the next year balancing his military duties with raising a brother young enough to be his own son, made harder by the politics of an Alethkar finally accepting its exile invading his every spare moment.

“Odium’s army is going to make it here soon, probably within the week. Our army won’t make it in time. Relis’s force is too far west of here, and Sheler’s is too far north— not that I’d trust that bastard to protect anything other than his own skin, anyway,” Kaladin said.
Lirin’s face was pinched as he walked to the dinner table, and Kaladin joined him.
“Please, come back with me. I couldn’t keep Tien safe,” Kaladin had to swallow around a lump in his throat. “I couldn’t keep Tien safe, but I can still keep you and little Oroden safe.”

Adolin liked that he could talk about Shallan like this, that doing so wasn’t excruciatingly painful for him or awkward for Kaladin. With someone entirely new, they probably would have seen his late wife’s memory as a threat. With Kaladin, it was a shared thing - love, sorrow, memories full of equal amounts laughter and pain. He could love Kaladin and still love Shallan. There was room in his heart for that and he knew there was room in Kal’s too.

Kaladin breathed in deeply. He didn’t understand how babies could smell so good all the time; Almighty knew Oroden got into or created enough mess every day that he should stink, but every time his little head wound up near Kaladin’s nose, he found himself distracted by it.
Oroden started squirming, never content to sit in Kaladin’s arms when he could be doing literally anything else. This was a battle Kaladin was becoming used to losing, but he really couldn’t let Oroden roam free when spears were in play, blunted for practice or not. Every parent would agree that it was simply too dangerous. Unlike every other parent, however, Kaladin had a secret weapon.
He lashed Oroden into weightlessness and let go. Oroden squealed and fisted his tiny hands into the lapels of Kaladin’s jacket, swinging his body back and forth, around and around.
