    This all started with a conversation with my Queen of Plotbunnies and Paladin of Writer's-Block Slaying, MinMu: So many fics include Bond breaking into Q's flat. What if it was the other way around?

    Summary: After the death of M, everything is in shambles. MI6 is trying to stay afloat and not let its enemies scent blood in the water; the new Quartermaster is orchestrating a flurry of activity to keep his branch at pique efficiency and therefore his agents alive; 007, the agent hit hardest by the death of the old M, is going through the motions and throwing himself into his work.

    Everyone is a little bit broken, and a lot exhausted.

    So when Bond and Q end up together in unexpected circumstances, perhaps the outcome should not be so unexpected...

    This series ended up being mostly one-shots ranging in time from before Q’s birth through to Spectre, and then AU from near the end of the film.

    Basically, Q, aka "chaos child" and "disaster spawn," was raised by a family of former assassins.

    Bond held out the weapon to Q, who took it from him gently, as if he were holding something fragile and beautiful. He reflexively checked that it wasn’t loaded, turned it over.

    Q gave Bond a sad smile. “Did you notice this etching?” he asked, pointing to a spot near the trigger where the metal had been rubbed slightly smoother, as if its owner had touched the spot frequently.

    “I did. I couldn’t read the Chinese characters. I’d guess the English letters are someone’s initials.”

    Q nodded. “Yes. They’re mine.”

    "Yours," Q confirms, biting his lip as Bond's grip tightens to the point where he knows he'll find bruises later. The second the awareness of pain slips across their bond, Bond's grip immediately eases. Q can smile then, lashes heavy with tears.
