This wasn't supposed to be Lance's experience at the Galaxy Garrison.
Lance fought to get into this school to prove that a sub could do anything a Dom could, not to be taken advantage of for his instinctual need as a sub to obey. Not to become the plaything of any Dom who decided they wanted him. Not to be raped. Not to be suicidal.
This wasn't supposed to be Keith's experience at the Galaxy Garrison, either.
Keith was supposed to keep his temper in check, get good grades, and finally make something of himself. Keith was supposed to win back the trust of his adoptive fathers after far too many wrong turns. Keith was not supposed to fall in love with a damaged sub.
Sometimes the path you never intended to walk is the right one, after all.

Summary
Lotor decides that the best way to attack Voltron is through Lance. Lance is the weakest link, he'd be easiest to break, just hold something he cares about in front of him and watch him come running. Lotor isn't expecting the storm he'll unleash.
Lance misses his family. Struggling to find his place in the team he's settled into the role of jokester and pseudo big brother for Pidge. Deep down, though, he longs to know exactly where he stands, wants the surety that comes with living in a big family and always knowing what role to play, be it big brother, little brother, uncle, friend... Seeing his sister held captive by Lotor brings out something in Lance he never wanted his team to see. Something he hasn't felt since years ago when his cousin showed up at 3AM covered in bruises.
Keith is trying to figure out the leader gig, Lance has been helping. Now Lance is the one being impulsive and reckless, and Keith is left in the dust trying to reel Lance in before he gives Lotor exactly what he wants. This new side of Lance scares him. He doesn't want to loose someone he's grown to care about so much.
If there's one thing everyone should learn from this, it's to never mess with Lance's family.

So, when he went into space in a blue mechanical lion, he became a paladin of Voltron, sharpshooter, jokester and a clueless boy with an honour in Biochemistry.
But that all came into use when the whole of Team Voltron (excluding Lance) caught a deadly virus.

Lance is stressed, Actually uses his brain, logic and Basic Survival Knowledge to make himself even more stressed, Shiro doesn't help, and Lance just wants to chill and doesn't know what to do. Since he knows no one would believe him if he said anything. Cause come on, who would believe the 'goofball' when you have the Two genius', plus Matt, not noticing anything?
Some time around Season 5, so Red Paladin Lance, and the 'Clone Shiro Theory' has gotten to the point of 'Red flag being waved in out faces' obvious.
