    Tim Drake is a solitary creature, whether by necessity or by natural predisposition. But he’s good at being alone. He’s learned to enjoy his own company, to take solace in his own cognizance. Aided by the brisk air of Gotham’s night air and a thrilling sense of independence, Tim learns that some things feel more special when you get to keep them for yourself. Unaccompanied walks down the school halls and singular movie tickets and dinners-for-one aren’t so bad when he can entertain himself with his own thoughts.

    Tim has become so good at being alone, he can almost pretend he isn’t desperate for the unconditional love and companionship that a soulmate would guarantee.

    It would be nice, Tim thinks, to have someone in his life who actually wants him. Someone who won’t leave every chance they get. Someone who enjoys his presence instead of merely tolerating it. Someone for whom he isn’t an obligation.

    Still his wrist remains blank.

    Until it doesn't.

    “Well, I’d offer to pretend to be your girlfriend, but I actually am trying to get laid tonight,” Cassie explained, then drained the rest of her glass.

    “Don’t worry, Kon,” Tim said, without putting an ounce of forethought into it. “I’ll scare them off for you.”

    Or, Tim pretends to be Conner's boyfriend, just to help him avoid unwanted attention. Because that's what friends do. Pretend to be romantically involved even though they are definitely not interested in each other in that way and it would totally never happen. Definitely.

    “Oh,” He replies, voice small. “Sorry. I’m fine, you can go back to sleep.”

      He got as far as sitting down in front of him, but found he didn’t actually have any words to say that wouldn’t go against everything in those parenting books Jason got him for his last birthday.

      After fifteen minutes of silence, Tim just dismissed himself.

      Ah. It was Lex Luther.

      “Who is this?”

It’s actually a pretty modern constellation, and it’s technically made of pieces of the Greek constellation, Argo Navis, which was Jason’s ship. The Greek myth Jason, not my brother.”

    Tim turned back to Kon, head tilted in that peculiar way that always reminded Kon of a bird.
