Elijah was his memories taken to protect hope, knowing he’d never be able to stay away from his family while they’re in danger.
What happens IF Elena finds Elijah in New York - but both of them have no recollection of each other?
(Elena only remembers everything leading up to being sacrificed, and the monster who took her life - but everything after that is wiped. She believes she left, with Jeremy, straight away and that Klaus never came back for her - Elijah is blurry and smudge in her memory's so she does not recognize him.)
