Summary
“You won’t even think about it?”
“I just don’t want you to inevitably have to divorce me when you find out how truly ill-equipped I am to be outdoors. I would miss you terribly.”
“What if I send you a link to the campground’s website to have a look, and ask for it to be my one and only birthday gift this year.”
“Your one and only birthday gift? You want nothing else than to sleep with your outdoors-averse husband in a tent overnight? Nothing else at all?”
“That is correct.”
David takes a moment, and for a very brief second hates how much and how apparently unconditionally he loves Patrick.
“Please send me the link, I will think about it.” He holds a finger up to Patrick’s delighted face. “I will think about it.”
“That’s all I ask.”*****
David does not do the outdoors. Until he does.

Summary
David trails his hand against the smooth concrete surface of the silo wall on his way back down the ramp from Patrick’s office, thinking about their conversation about upstairs. It’s terrifying when you first see it, Patrick had said. David closes his eyes, putting one foot and then the other on the concrete. He imagines he is walking on the road his family took to get to the silo their last day upstairs. He tries to picture the dull light, the gray-green trees, the warm air closing around him. He tries to focus on the silence, on the tap-scrape pulse of his rubber soles on the pavement. He imagines walking as far as his legs will take him.
He didn’t even realize how badly he wanted to be free of this place until he sat down in Patrick’s office.

Summary
The rest of the house was a manageable project for the two of them once Patrick had reassured David that the distinct aura of the seventies could be easily remedied with a lick of paint and a few replaced carpets. At the time, Patrick had assumed that the lick of paint would be applied mostly by him, having seen first hand David’s disinclination around what he deemed messy or dirty projects. What he didn’t account for was David’s self-professed superior knowledge of the correct aesthetic for their home. After two years and change, he reasons, he should probably have known better.

Summary
David Rose stepped out of the rental car and pulled his suitcase from the trunk. He slipped the weekender bag over his shoulder and stared up at the house before him. It never stopped to amaze him that his parents had managed to build such a mammoth of a home in such a small town. Then again, avoiding a place for almost a decade would change anyone’s perspective.
-----
David returns home to Schitt's Creek after a ten year absence for his sister's wedding where he is forced to face not only the reasons he left in the first place, but the mistakes that he's made along the way.

“What are you doing here?”
Patrick blinks beneath the toque shoved onto his head, steadily dripping melting snow from his coat onto the mat they once purchased together. “Um… it’s my weekend."
What? David is already shaking his head, but Patrick takes a step forward, eyes wide, skin pale despite his cold-flushed cheeks.
“I get Christmas. You get New Years. I thought..." Patrick trails off and licks his lips. Behind him, snow blows in through the still-open doorway. "I thought that's what we agreed."
Or, the exes-stuck-in-a-cabin fic I wrote totally and completely for myself.

Summary
"But what is he supposed to do when the life that is made for him, made to measure, the life he’s spent weeks and months and years building with Patrick, what is he supposed to do when that life intersects with a place that’s not meant for him?
That’s the problem, David thinks, reflecting back on this now, staring out of the window of a faceless New York hotel room, waiting for Patrick to come back to him, watching life go on, uninterrupted, below his feet, while he sits, stagnant and unmoving, his life as he knows it on pause, not knowing when he’s going to get it back.
It had all been so perfect, and David had been so comfortable in the rhythm of it, the predictable, steady cadence of Patrick’s love, that he’d forgotten to be scared.
He thought he was invincible, under the shelter of the life he’d built. Under the promise of I will make you so happy here. Now, here is thousands of miles away from them, an almost invisible speck in the distance, and David is back in a city he left behind years ago, a place that represents another lifetime, another understanding of truth, another David Rose."or; David is done with New York, until he isn't, has dealt with it, until he hasn't.

Summary
“Ugh!” David shouts, trying to figure out how to explain how utterly maddening this man was. “Yes, he was polite, I guess, but the way he said it was like—" he lets out a noise of frustration “—you know that fucking emoji of the moon?”
“The one with that condescending smile that looks like it probably just did a really bad fart and is proud of it?”
“Yes!” David points so forcefully at Stevie that he almost falls off the couch. “He may have said polite words but his expression was pure stinky-fart-moon-face!”
Stevie makes a noise of disgust. “I hate that fucking emoji.”
David meets Patrick Brewer, a glassblower, at the Elmington Craft Fair and loves his work, but wishes it didn’t come attached to someone so condescending. Not that it matters, because apparently Patrick has no interest in becoming part of the Rose Apothecary brand. It wouldn’t be nearly so annoying if Patrick’s best friend wasn’t about to be David’s newest vendor.

Summary
There was a strange man sitting at the end of the counter. Patrick tried not to stare, but it was hard not to. They didn’t get too many new faces around here, and if they did, it was brief. Schitt’s Creek wasn’t the usual stop for travelers moving west.
It had to be David Rose, the newest remittance man to come to town. There were rumors that he was from New York City and had been sent to their humble town in Alberta after a series of his antics left his family in a web of shame and he was sent north and west to settle down.

Summary
“Well I’m going to run some errands,” David says, brushing a stray bit of fuzz off his navy blue sweater. “But we’re still on for birthday dinner?”
“Yeah,” Patrick nods. He’s pretty sure David knows the annual birthday surprise party stopped being a surprise after year two or three. David doesn’t even inflict fictional catastrophes on the café as a decoy anymore. But Patrick plays along anyway. In some ways their whole partnership is built on playing along.
OR David and Patrick have been business partners for a decade until, on Patrick's 40th Birthday, everything changes.

Summary
Patrick is just getting ready to leave when he spots him across the bar. The man has his head thrown back in laughter, the lines of his neck long and graceful. His smile is its own gas light, cutting through the smoke of the bar like sunshine off the Seine, a literal impossibility at this late hour. Patrick can’t hear his laugh over the music, but he doesn’t need to. He’s so busy watching, he doesn’t see the waitress drop another drink on the table until it’s too late, and she’s already moved on to serving the next table. Now that it’s here, he’s not going to turn it down.

Summary
“Um,” his voice cracks and he clears his throat and tries again, “Um, Patrick can’t come into work today?”
“Oh?” Alexis asks, keeping the question carefully nonchalant which really only makes things worse. If she’s sparing his feelings then shit surely must be hitting the fan.
“Yeah.”
“Did he say why?” Again, meticulously neutral.
“No.”
Or, the morning after Grad Night goes somewhat differently when Patrick gets a call from home.
