dustin’s encounter with death finally clicks something in the boy, and he shuts down. stops talking to the party and co., doesn’t try at school anymore, never goes to the hellfire meetings. he stopped using cerebro to talk to suzie.
he sits in his room, day after day, wondering what he could have done differently. sometimes he goes to eddie’s old trailer— it’s boarded up now—, sneaks in, and just sits. talks as if eddie can hear him.
the party and co. are about at their limit. they can’t keep seeing dustin trudge along like this, so they start planning get together, ‘random’ meetings. anything to get the kid talking.
even amidst their own troubles, they try their best. they help each other so that they can better help dustin. and that means they all learn a lot more about each other as the days go by. they start rebuilding.
and hopefully, they can help dustin, too.
and finally it seems like they are making progress. and then, he finds a note that turns his world upside down.

“Don’t pretend like you’re not happy to see me like this!” Tommy interrupts sharply, leaning forward in his seat and craning his neck to get a good look at him. “If you’re so fucking obsessed with controlling everything I do, you must like it when I’m fucking miserable, right?”
or: When Phil dies and Techno moves across the country as a result, Wilbur and Tommy are the only ones left in the house. Tensions rise over the months, and after the nastiest fight they've had in ages, Tommy catches the first bus he can find out of the state to crash at Dream's house.
