Summary
The house smelled of damp wood and dust, as though it had spent decades holding its breath. Perched on the edge of a sleepy, forgotten village, it stood like a relic from another time. The roof sagged under years of neglect, and the cracked windows let in more cold than light. To Remus Lupin, though, it was home—or at least, the closest thing he had to one.
He dropped his suitcase by the sofa, the sound of the worn leather thudding softly in the stillness. Sirius Black stood just inside the doorway, his hand still on the frame, as though afraid stepping further in might make the place collapse.
“It’s…” Sirius trailed off, his grey eyes scanning the room. “It’s yours.”
Remus let out a small, humorless laugh. “That’s one way of putting it.”

The waves rocked Pearl’s tiny wooden boat, each rise and fall mimicking the rhythm of her fractured breathing. Her hands gripped the makeshift oars, splintered and raw from weeks of desperate use, though she barely noticed the pain anymore. The ocean stretched endlessly before her, a mirror of her own emptiness. Somewhere far behind her lay the shattered remnants of the world she had fled—a place she would never return to.
The Watchers had wanted her to be a monster, hadn’t they? They had twisted her life, her friendships, her love into some sick game, pushing her to break so they could watch her fall. And the others... they had all fallen, every last one of them.
Her chest tightened as their faces flashed in her mind, unbidden and cruel. Grian, with his sharp smile that always seemed to know more than he let on. Scott, who had fought so fiercely for survival yet still found room for kindness. Martyn, whose loyalty had cost him everything. All gone. And she? She had survived.

“He’s not going to hurt us!” Nene shouted, her voice trembling but determined. “He could’ve attacked earlier, but he didn’t! He’s not like them!”
Mitsuri hesitated, her grip on her sword faltering. “Nene, you don’t understand. He’s a demon. They can’t be trusted—”
“I know him!” Nene cried, her voice breaking. She turned her head to look at Hanako, her eyes searching his for something only she could see. “I know him…”
The courtyard fell silent, save for the soft rustling of the morning breeze. Hanako swallowed hard, his glowing eyes meeting hers.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered, his voice hoarse and low. “I—” He hesitated, his throat tightening. “I couldn’t save you… not last time. But I’ll protect you now.”
Tears welled in Nene’s eyes, but she didn’t move. She didn’t let go of him.

Whatever danger was about to find him, he realized with a sinking feeling of dread in the pit of his stomach, it would find him defenseless. His staff isn’t in his hands, lost somewhere among the battlefield. He wasn’t sure when he lost it.
What he found instead made his eyes go wide, spotting the familiar dark armor with red accents as it all collapsed to the ground with a loud thunk.
Scott watched as Nominal collapsed to the ground.
