Summary
Harrowhark didn’t want her name in lights. She didn’t want to step alongside you, further into lyctorhood, into glory. She didn’t want to share the experience, to look upon you with the eyes of her cavalier and see someone as great as her. Someone else who’d been able to ascend, to grace the presence of the Emperor Undying. She’d rather fall apart at the seams for her supposed meat shield than acknowledge you.

Not even that. You’re an uneasy ally, your lobotomy was essentially a booty call, a desperate plea to preserve the one she actually gives a rat’s ass about. You have to know that you’re below a dead meathead on the Harrowhark priority rankings.
Ouch.
Maybe that’s why you elect, after a period of awkward silence, to leave her in a pile of tepid water and her own blood, wheezing softly.

Gideon would have held her breath and paused if by some miracle she managed to scrape together a do-over. Harrow probably would have, too, just to avoid having to say anything. Lapsed into a comfortable silence again with their fingers entwined the two of them could sit and stare and wait and wait and wait, witness their entire lives stretched elastic before them: St. Samael’s and the horror of the last week-and-a-half fading distantly into the horizon behind.
The stars currently floating above the elevator shaft were bright white and so sugary sweet they hurt Gideon’s teeth. No Southern Cross though— which sucked balls. She couldn’t really turn, either, to see if even a glimpse of it was visible from her second- (more likely third-) to-last resting place.
Okay, fine, pedantics: the place where Gideon Nav was most definitely going to die.

Gideon baulked at the ceiling for a second or two, before opening her mouth and completely capitulating to the part of her brain that she trusted the least with making reasonable decisions:
“Yeah, I get la-, I mean, I have a girlfriend.”OR
In the cohort, Gideon gets to be whoever, whatever, literally anyone she wants to be. So what's the harm in pretending to have a girl waiting for her back on the Ninth? It's not like said girl will ever see her again.

“Have you slept at all? It’s nearly morning,” Harrow said, almost exasperated, but more worried than anything else. Gross.
Gideon made another noncommittal noise. Harrow placed a hand on her shoulder; it was only then that she turned around to look at the other girl. Harrow’s face was unpainted– it was more and more these days, Gideon was too nervous to ask why– and her hair was unbrushed. She looked as if she had just woken up, which, of course, she had.
Gideon looked at her eyes last, because she always did. It was still strange, her own eyes in Harrow’s face. It was even stranger to look in the mirror and see Harrow’s black eyes looking back at her. It was a good kind of strange, though. It was a reminder of what she would never, not in her entire life, forget– that she was a part of Harrow now, and Harrow was a part of her. More simply, that she was Harrow’s, and Harrow was hers.
“Come back to bed, beloved," Harrow said, and Gideon couldn’t have argued with her if she wanted to.
