“Always think,” Rocky shifted his ball closer, bumping into Grace’s shoulder. Grace bumped it back, lips quirking up. “Think, think, think. Human brain never shut off. What Grace think about, question?”
Grace went quiet for a moment and looked away. “Uh, my… ‘mate.’ Back on Earth. I remember I had one.”
A series of happy little squeaks and chirps erupted from Rocky, his claws waving in frantic little jazz hands. He must have been excited to realize Grace had someone waiting for him back at home. Grace still didn't have the heart to tell him the truth, and likely never would. He shakes the thought away and focuses, eyes half-lidded and flickering back toward Rocky. The display pulled a genuine smile from Grace, though he wasn’t sure there was anything happy about the man back on Earth who grabbed him like a dog.
________________Alternatively, Grace has a flashback and subsequent revelations about himself and the person he was dating back on Earth. It affects him more than he thought it would.

Of all the people on earth that Daniel would ever guess to be on the other side of a text like that? Alice is at the bottom of the list. She walked out on them, leaving a little girl alone with her junkie dad who didn't know how to cope without the love of his life. Why would it be her? That'd be insane.
(But of course, Armand knows he is insane. He has always been insane with the extremes to which he will go for the ones he loves. Daniel simply cannot recall that detail or so many others about their relationship. At least, not at the moment.)

Will they just keep kicking this same dead horse, hoping for a different outcome this time?It's been almost twelve years since Daniel met Armand in San Francisco, over ten years since they got married, and not yet two years since their family started to shatter to pieces. There soon may be nothing of their love left to salvage.

It wasn't fascinating, the way the boy didn't know whether to lean into the touch or away from it, confused by the comfort and the pain it offered in equal measures. It wasn't. Armand could do the same thing — did do the same thing, whenever Louis deigned to touch him at all — and Louis still thought he was boring. It couldn't be this that had captivated him.
But that didn't mean it wasn't fun.

“And you are–,” Armand pauses, as though searching for words. Finally settles on… “Safe.”
The implications in that one word. Daniel’s near certain the kid doesn’t mean safe as in a safe bet, a sure thing. He means that he feels safe. And the fact that the kid is finding safety here of all places– in an old journalist’s arms, in his own professor’s bed, without any defined relationship. Is he speaking about emotional safety? Or is he speaking about physical safety?
Daniel’s afraid it’s the latter.

Summary
Cardinal Lawrence has always been able to work miracles, and it is his greatest secret.
When the bomb explodes, a metal shutter on the high clerestory windows - put there for their protection, but really to maintain their secrecy - is shunted from its mooring and flies across the Sistine Chapel. It strikes Cardinal Benítez directly.
There is no choice, really. Thomas saves his life. And, in doing so, reveals his miracles to every cardinal of the assembled conclave. Unsurprisingly, this changes the outcome of the final vote.

“Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontificate?” Aldo asks him. He seems apologetic about it, at least.
Thomas takes only a moment to make sure that his words won’t break and his voice won’t tremble. “Accepto.”
He always feared this day would come.
