Ice turns sharply toward the sound, just in time to see the ocean pulling back in the distance. Not with the softness of low tide, but violently, fast, the entire coastline withdrawing like it’s inhaling with the intent to scream.
Rocks, shells, twisted kelp, the bones of the seabed — all exposed, glittering, unnatural. Kids cheer and race toward the vanishing waves to collect prizes. Adults stare, dumbstruck. No one reacts fast enough.
But Ice goes gray.
