It was always the same basic message. Always the same song and dance every year of his life. Wake up excited for his birthday only to immediately have the day ruined by those simple words. Words that used to be delivered to him softly from his mother, but now were displayed emotionlessly across his phone screen.
Something came up.
At least now they were delivered from the man himself, he supposed.

“Of course I can!” Nick responded desperately. He needed to get this back on track. Needed to calm Charlie down, needed to help him. “And you’re doing so well, but you’re going to get kicked off the team soon if you keep getting into fights! Or worse, face some sort of punishment from the school! Coach Singh has a no bullying policy and absolutely no tolerance for homophobia. You can let her handle these things!”

At the end of the day, Nick was Charlie’s boyfriend. It was his job to make Charlie happy, to keep him happy. That was the whole point of being in a relationship. They understood each other, they helped each other, they were each other’s support. Nick was meant to be Charlie’s support. The person he could lean on and talk to when he had problems. That was his role as Charlie’s boyfriend, and he was not going to fail at it. He couldn’t fail at it. Even if he was floundering like a fish out of water trying to figure out what the hell he was doing right now, he was going to figure it out. For Charlie.
“Niiiick!” Nick lifted his head from where it was leaning back on the donut at Sahar’s voice, seeing the girls had at some point moved closer to the shore again during his reflection.
How long had he been just floating there thinking?
“Come play volleyball!”
Nick let out a breath. “Okay!”

And really, he didn’t encourage Charlie to, even if he did think it was incredibly hot. But Ben Hope was absolutely the exception to that rule.
Charlie hummed, giving him a teasing look. “Mm, yes, gotta put your new found punching skills to the test. I’ll grade you on them. Make sure you were actually paying attention.”

Summary
Charlie Spring endures constant and horrific bullying during Year 9 after being outed as gay. He tries to ignore it. Tries to not let it get to him. Tries to ignore all the sneers and harsh words thrown at him day in and day out. But it hurts. It gets to him. He slowly becomes more and more a shell of himself, becomes more and more angry, until one day he just snaps. He gets in an all out brawl with the guys who just won't leave him alone and winds up hitting his breaking point, having a complete mental breakdown. Everything changes that day. He's angry, pissed off, and he can't hold it in anymore. He builds a wall of defense around himself made out of violence and anger, shoving all his other emotions and personality down in order to protect himself.
Until Nick Nelson comes along and completely shatters everything he thought he knew, and forces him to start feeling again.
