“Okay, Pony, listen to me.” Darry's previously apprehensive tone is replaced by a far more balanced one. “You’ve gotta calm down, alright? You’re gonna make yourself sick.”
Shaking his head, it takes every bit of control that he has to sob out an answer. “I-I can’t.”
But his brother has always been able to match him for stubbornness, and his voice is nothing if not firm. “Yes, you can. You’ve gotten these plenty of times before, remember? You just haven’t had one in a little while. It’s rattling you a bit.”

Darry winks as he walks past him to take mark, reaching out to ruffle Pony’s already windswept hair. “Let’s see what you’re made of, kid.”
God, it feels like he’s being sent to his death.

“You’re sick, kiddo.” Darry moves to stand up so that he can start gathering some of the belongings scattered messily across the room. “Just ‘cause you’re at college doesn’t mean you have to do things alone. You’re coming home, alright? It’s not up for negotiation anymore.”
Or;Two months into college, Ponyboy comes down with the worst illness he's had in a long while. Being too stubborn to return home, his brothers decide that the only logical move is to drive out to the University of Oklahoma and bring him back themselves.

“Pony,” Soda pleads desperately, squeezing the younger boy’s fingers, “honey, save for these last weeks, when have I ever let you down?”
In the dimness, Pony’s expression shifts from the hurt that it had held a few seconds ago. He looks almost reflective, as if sorting through years of memories to find a contradiction. After a moment, he sighs. “Never.”
Or;
Soda's been acting strange all month, leaving for work early and coming back long after dark. Pony's convinced that his brother's upset with him for accepting that offer at the University of Oklahoma.
The car that Soda and Steve are secretly repairing in the DX garage says otherwise.

Soda sighed. “Yeah, I was there, kid. But you don’t sound it. I’ve known ya since the day you were born, baby. I know when ya lie. I know when you’re really okay… when you’re really happy. Come on, tell me what’s goin’ on.”
Or:
In an attempt to pass his college finals, Ponyboy spends every spare second he has studying, not taking the time to eat or sleep properly. Which ultimately ends with him being sent to the hospital.
Darry and Soda instantly drive down to be with him, and Pony finally tells the truth.

Ponyboy Curtis has been riding for the Pony Express since its inauguration a year ago. His gang and family works at the home station he frequents. It’s hard work, but it’s thrilling. The mail must be fast, no matter what.
That rhythm is broken after an accident during a thunderstorm on the trail, and Pony doesn’t come into the home station on time. At all.
It’s life or death, and it’s up to Ponyboy and the Curtis gang at the Little Blue River Station.
