Samuel was silent. Anna felt the urge to hug him, but she didn't want to do so without asking him first, like she did with Margaret. She had to make sure she wasn't overstepping. Samuel cleared his throat. He then stuttered a few times, before finally managing to get the words out. This felt different than the eloquent, well spoken man she had met earlier. Something was definitely wrong.
"I was thinking about what you said about your father."
Oh. Anna didn't know what she was expecting his concern to be, but it certainly wasn't that.

Hordes of people, adults and children alike, were teeming from the streets. Each and every one of them were focused on the two of them as he continued to pull her along. The citizens of Chazira were not what she had expected—she assumed that they would be dead, lifeless people puppeteered by limbs of fog. But as they gaped at her, she could see that wasn't the case. If anything, they seemed more alive than she was. Their faces conveyed many emotions, hope, joy, pride, exhilaration, amazement, mania, but there was one that stood out to her in particular: reverence.
