Summary

Some try to right their wrongs. Kaz Brekker welcomes any of them into the Dregs so long as they have a useful talent.
Some rumors claim, he keeps their hearts in jars. He delights in tormenting them, others whisper. He made a deal with the devil for their souls, others are convinced. Whatever the reason, one thing is known: Kaz Brekker only hires those who are already dying. Kaz lets the rumors go because they are useful and because they are all less horrific than what he actually is.

Summary
The faculty at Ketterdam University can't wrap their heads around the Crow Chronicle’s sudden boom in popularity- is there something new about the design that draws people's attention? Perhaps it's the addition of the local bites column written by the ever-so-charming marketing major from Ravka?
Even Professor Haskell, the club's advisor, can't pinpoint what's changed, other than the two co- editors-in-chief he recently appointed. The pairing is, admittedly, a recipe for disaster, considering the two are tied for the top spot in KU's journalism program, challenging each other every chance they get.
It's no matter, the Crow Chronicle is a hit, which means Haskell must be doing something right. Besides, in his experience, most of the time the paper's success is dependent on something trivial, like where the stands are located or how often it rains each week.
Most of the time, at least.

They certainly didn’t know why he really wore gloves. Most weren’t even convinced he was human. No one ever suspected that Kaz Brekker was deaf.

Her inky black hair cascaded in silken waves down her back, a few artfully loosened strands framing her face with an elegance that felt both deliberate and effortless. Delicate gold earrings adorned her ears in asymmetrical placements, their subtle gleam echoing the glint of a small, perfectly positioned ring on her sloping nose. Her makeup whispered rather than spoke — soft, refined, enhancing rather than concealing — much like the subtle grace that seemed to emanate from her very being.
Kaz found himself transfixed. She was a masterpiece, sculpted by an artist’s deft hand or brushed into existence with the finest strokes of a painter’s vision. There was no other explanation for beauty so effortless, so utterly spellbinding. Especially amidst a place like this.
Or, Inej needs help escaping a creep at a bar. Kaz, having never met her before but desperate to escape his boring shift, helps her out.

Certain vending machines on campus require exact change.
Kaz Brekker knows this. Loathes this. Has lobbied for the replacement and improvement of the machines which still exclusively take exact change.
And yet he still finds himself standing in front of one of the two change machines on campus (he really should just go to the bank) in order to cram a few bucks into it to get some change.~*~*~*~*~
There were only a handful of vending machines on campus that required exact change. But this one, nestled into the back hallway happened to have a Suli mango pop flavored one that reminded Inej of her parents and summer and the sea and the wind (and maybe it was starting to remind her of someone else too).

Jasmine Fenton loved her little brother. She considered “Danny's big sister” a fundamental part of her identity. In fact, she held this fragment of herself so close to her heart that it was impossible that she could exist as herself, Jazz Fenton, without the part of her that was her brother's sister. She wasn't dependent on him to define her, of course, and she understood herself as an individual outside of her role as an older sister. It didn't matter, though. None of her dissection of her and Danny's dynamic changed the fact that she was losing Danny, that somehow, something had changed, and since then she had been desperately reaching across a crack in her very world for a brother who didn't care if she let them both fall off the edge. She knew logically that that's how it was, how it was supposed to be. Danny was a teenager. She was nearly graduated, and ready to leave Amity Park and start a new life. It still didn't make her feel any less like the further away Danny drifted, the more she lost herself with him.
