“You were right, Cait,” The words taste like ash in her mouth, but she pushes through. “Powder’s gone. But I can make this right. If you get Jayce to fix the gauntlets, I can do this myself. No one else needs to get hurt.” Except for Vi, of course, but if she had the choice to take the pain of others onto herself, she’d make that choice every single time. They will say that her sadness, though understandable, was disproportionate; the trials she suffered in her own home were not so bad as all that: her king was good, her brother loving, her cousin fiercely loyal. They will say that the tragedy at the heart of her story was nobody’s fault, her pain was real, but its cause was amorphous, nebulous, nearly self-created.
This is the story the history books will not tell.

However, Gimli saw no reason to let him have his own way entirely. "And by my people do you mean the Longbeards, or the Dwarves of Erebor, or the wandering mender that I now seem to be?"

Everyone in Porsche’s life is being a huge fucking idiot today. (Not Chay.) Porsche isn’t quite sure how he made it back home to Chay after he left the minor family house, but he’s here, sitting in Chay’s desk chair at the major family house.
Chay is sitting on the bed, looking quietly furious in the way he only does when Porsche gets them both in over their heads. Porsche has moved him into the compound, back home, and now back into the compound again, and apparently Chay has formed Opinions and also found time to dye his hair blue. Porsche suspects he is Not Coping.
I can fix it, kiddo, Porsche almost says, but he doesn't think he can, not this time.

The girl sticks close to Joel’s side, eyes wary, as he guides her back over.

He blinks at the comment, but Joel doesn’t seem offended, even as he rolls his eyes.
