Jax stares at the white screen. To think it gave them hope just moments before. To think he-

He stares at the table, the buttons in his peripheral. His head is buzzing, he wants to laugh, he wants to cry, he wants to get out of here.

    It’s horribly, horribly quiet.

    “I really thought…” Gangle whimpers.

He can feel eyes burning into his back. He doesn’t want to do this right now. Not again.

Not that anyone cares what he wants.

Zooble’s voice bounces into his ear. “What the [BOINK!] was that, Jax?” they seethe.

As quickly as he came and dashed the cast’s hopes, Caine vanished.

The basket of soaps fell to the ground. With it came a thick and oppressive silence.

    Nobody spoke up. Nobody moved.

One of the few well-documented things about exploiting is how it can change the user. Mentally, in the way of realizing that there is power in warping reality, and what are consequences to a god? Emotionally, in the overwhelming rush of adrenaline and control over whatever has been altered.
There’s another possible alteration, though, one that is not so much talked about. Physical warping, the loss of humanity through seizing godhood, or some fragment of it, for one’s own gain.

Philza seemed taller in real life. Still blond like Chayanne, scraped-up and wiry with bedraggled wings he held close to his back– dressed like he had been on the island, in the green robes he’d been dropped off in, except now he had scraps of a Federation uniform on, too, and a gas mask slung over his shoulder with a long beak like a bird’s, not the kind Chayanne grew up with for emergencies. Tired eyes, with crow’s feet that tightened when he caught sight of Chayanne in the cell.

Hi, Dad. The words scurried like rats trying to escape a sinking ship, hitting doors they couldn’t squeeze under. He hadn’t had an easy time talking with his voice since he’d come out of the tank, and right now he didn’t even have his pad to scribble on.

Chayanne dipped his head a tiny bit so he seemed polite without compromising his line of sight. He dropped his metal bar with a clang and raised his hands.

Gem’s hands hurt, backpack over her shoulder and satellite phone probably in her pocket still, emphasis on the probably and good luck if it wasn’t, and her muscles hurt like they’d been shredded to bits by the climb. And maybe they had, honestly, because what a climb it had been.

Scrambling up the side of a slot canyon, hearing the rumbling of a whole freaking flood from upriver-- Pearl had boosted her for the last part. They’d gone up like thirty feet, using handholds they could barely fit their fingertips into, and the water had frothed below them, churning with mud and debris.

Pearl had heard it before Gem had. The canyon had garbled the sound of running water, but Pearl had frozen, knuckles going white on the straps of her hiking pack, hackles raising practically visibly.

    Werewolf senses. Never failed.

    Summary

“Scar, I know how it looks, but I’m not trespassing,” Grian blurted. He was scraped up all over, now that Scar was really paying attention: his face and arms and legs were torn, clothes tattered like he’d dived right through a rosebush. He was trembling. “I’m– I’m resting for a brief moment, nothing else. I’ll be out of your hair in the morning, I’ll make that a promise, and the next time I come by, I’ll bring you a dead mouse to repay you, or a live mouse, or I’ll just, I’ll owe you, I don’t know–”

“I mean, sure, if you say so,” Scar agreed, and Grian cut off, shrinking away. Scar’s heart twisted. “A dead mouse, a live mouse, an unspecified IOU to be collected at a later date, all of these currencies and more are accepted here at Trader Scar’s. We have a very strict non-discrimination policy, I’ll have you know. Very strict.”

Grian blinked at him and unfurled the slightest bit. His bad wing– and it was a bad wing, Scar could tell, a very injured wing indeed– tucked in, wound weeping sluggishly onto the basement’s concrete windowsill. Scar had to take a second to reinforce his smile, gentling his whole demeanor so Grian would stop looking at him like that.

“Poultry Man, I’m gonna have to ask you to step back,” Scar said, and Grian went still. “Or, y’know, I guess I’m telling you? Definitely telling you, this is an order– step away from the Voidsong. Remove your digits from his person now, please, or I am going to have to explode you and explain that to Pearl and she will never give me extra concert tickets ever again.”

Scar had his bow drawn, an arrow pointed in Grian’s direction. He was close enough that it would tear through Grian’s host body like paper, though the explosives in Scar’s quiver would’ve been more effective, and he was tense around the eyes, a wobbling downturn to his mouth. His voice had trembled, emotion leaking through like before he’d gone professional.

Grian knew how those feelings tasted from the inside. He knew those hands, that vascular system, how Scar’s smooth voice felt as it vibrated out of his throat, as his tongue shaped the words– and that was what drew him back from Voidsong, even if it really would’ve been wiser to keep himself intertwined, because he knew that terror, too.

Incredibly well. Way too well, as a matter of fact.

“Stop telling the universe I’m dead!” Grian shouted, and lightning shot through Mumbo’s brain, juddering between his ribs like a high-voltage traveling arc and grounding in his molars. He choked, muscles convulsing, skin feeling– feeling tight, and thin and not really there, and then the sensation passed and he could move again, enough to push himself upright.

His hooves had split into hard, keratinous fingers. He stared at them, ears ringing, and Grian said, sounding like he spoke through gritted teeth, “I’m not dead. I’m going to respawn, because this isn’t the weirdest thing that’s happened to us and it’s all going according to plan. Repeat that after me, please."

Mumbo sniffled and said obediently, “This is all going exactly as I planned."

The zombie definitely saw him, but she just stood at the bottom of the ledge, not bringing out her bow or anything. Etho wanted to go down and stand close to her– she’d be the slightest bit taller, broader, with a cooler body temperature than his, she’d be relaxed as soon as she could see he wasn’t bleeding too much– she would not be those things, because Etho was letting his brain run away with him and this was one hundred percent a trick.

“There, is that better?” the zombie called up to him. Etho tensed. “I literally murdered those other guys, just as I promised I would. Are you finally convinced now that I’m not here to kill you?”

“Take off your shirt and wrap it around your nose and mouth,” the shadow instructed, and that sounded like a great idea, yeah, Chayanne could do that. He wriggled out of his shirt, gasping in shallow little inhales as it caught on his wings, and tied it around his head. It bumped weird against his skull mask, so he had to take that off, but when he put the mask back on top it kept the cloth in place.

“Good,” the shadow said, and Chayanne couldn’t make out what it was, except a blurry figure with a deep voice who sounded very stressed, but he could tell it wasn’t anybody he knew. Couldn’t be a normal person, either, because there wasn’t space to stand on the tower he’d built. “Keep doing that. If you breathe real slow, most of the particles should get caught by the cloth.”

Chayanne nodded, eyes watering. He wiped them with the backs of his hands, fingers twinging, and managed to sign, “Are you real?”

The wood didn’t give at all. Bashing it with his knees had no more effect, and raising his head to try another angle pierced it with agony. All Missa could smell was dust and blood, his own exhalations; he couldn’t hear anything but himself. It was too dark to see.

He lost time. He pressed back against the surface he’d been laid on and imagined he was holding a chunk of his skull in place, because nothing else could have hurt so much, and swallowed back tears, hands crushed uselessly around his shoulders. There was just no leverage, no way to get leverage, nobody out there listening.

His mask was gone. His tattoos had been cut away. Someone had buried him alive without them, and now he would die looking like any other stranger, not devoted to his goddess at all.

    Summary

Losing a body part permanently was really hard to do, was the issue. Doc had lost his in a fight with a god, and Iskall had lost their eye away from Hermitcraft, but nobody else had body modifications last more than a season unless they really put in the effort. A server with infinite respawn would do everything possible to return a player to the healthiest state they’d been in, so a severed limb would come back on respawn, even if the wound had partially healed. Worse yet, taking regen or healing potions for a disfiguring wound would make your body try to grow the limb back.

So Grian couldn’t take potions, and he couldn’t let himself die. And he had to cut off his wings, even though he loved flying as much as he loved building, because they weren’t really his, and they were a problem. They were the source of most of his problems.

He still wasn’t sure if they’d made the moon crash into the server back in Season 8.

The guards left, slamming the door shut behind them, and Pearl felt her hair stand on end as the wards reactivated, a staticky zing traveling through her shackles and grounding in her skin.

The prisoner startled, levered himself up and hissed through his teeth. “Right, that wasn’t the smartest decision I’ve made this week,” he remarked quietly. “Scar? Are you across from me?”

Shuffling in the opposite cell. “Can you do me a favor?” a second voice asked. “The next time you threaten guards, can you try to have a weapon first to strike fear into their hearts? I think you broke our hand.”

“We have another,” the man said defensively, and Scar huffed a laugh. “And anyway– oh. There’s someone else in here with me.”

Grian stared at Mumbo in horror, lips white with fury, his rainbow of feathers bristling, and Mumbo managed a weak thumbs-up. He had to grab his other hand to do it manually.

“You’re not whitelisted,” the admin blurted, and Grian shifted his attention to him, almost smiling.

Grian had never looked at anyone the way he looked at the admin now.

“I don’t know if I’m up to a fight,” Scar said weakly. “We could just not fight at all, how about that? We can restore the bonds of friendship, achieve a dual victory where we live forever on this small patch of land, surrounded by— okay, that’s a little morbid. I feel like we should take down the Crastle at least.”

Grian startled at a rush of mental static and said ruefully, “Oh, the ghosts don’t appreciate that at all.” Scar turned his back to rummage through a chest. It would have been so easy— too easy. Grian wouldn’t do it. “They want blood, Scar. Yours or mine, or both.”

“Can we at least fight at Pizza’s grave?”

That made sense. The desert where they’d started, where they’d kept watch and barred the door against snarling mobs—

“It’s getting dark,” Grian said instead of what he should have been saying, which was yes, right away, let’s go before it truly gets dark. “How about we do that in the morning?”

Somewhere above him, Grian heard the faint drip, drip, drip of water off glow lichen. Closer, he heard someone laugh a little incredulously, a sound like surprised amusement– like home– and jerked up his head so fast it made him wince.

Scar laughed again at that. “Whoa there, you’re making us lightheaded!” he chided, reaching forward to tap Grian on the forehead. Grian leaned away before he could touch, suddenly very much aware of his surroundings, and Scar drew back his hand. “Are you that surprised to see me? I thought we agreed to stick together, Grian.”

Grian stared at him. Scar wore tan and brown, a green band around his arm as vibrant as bamboo leaves. His eyes were the same color, skin unblemished except for his oldest wounds. He was crouched in front of Grian, almost at the edge of the ledge, but it didn’t look like he was in any danger of losing his balance.

Of course it didn’t. Scar couldn’t really be here. Grian was just more disoriented than he’d thought.

The Higher-Ups wanted Xisuma to hurt Mumbo for this. He had no good reason not to hurt Mumbo Jumbo, a redstone genius he’d hosted for years– no good reason not to flaunt his authority and take him apart at the base level, and it would feel good, wouldn’t it, wouldn’t it feel so great and entertaining–

“Several Hermits lost their whole inventories in the explosion,” Xisuma pointed out, thinking very loudly about those inventories and nothing else. “Let’s see, there’s Stress, Iskall, Grian, Scar, False…”

“Yes, and– and Etho. That’s put him behind on the blaze farm, but I could help with that, also, and provide– I could make it up to people,” Mumbo said, voice breaking. “It is a lot of damage. I know.”

Unruly and irresponsible, the observers echoed, a rasp at the base of Xisuma’s brain. Watching. Not even that interesting. There are standards to uphold, Admin Xisumavoid. We would hate to replace you.

“There are standards to uphold,” Xisuma echoed miserably.
