Yet somehow, despite his lack of participation in the supernatural world, the Winchesters found him. They found him, and now he has to keep them both alive, or he gets a one-way ticket Downstairs, and that’s about as far from an easy job as you can get.

Dean didn't get paid nearly enough for the job he did. Purchasing Lucifer's Prom Dress with the money he had set aside for his missing brother and then traveling across the country with the Boy with the Demon Blood riding shotgun had to be worth more than credit card fraud could provide.
Sam didn't get paid enough, either, but he wasn't as picky as Dean. He just wanted a family and a place to call home. Maybe a break from the constant state of terror he lived in. He knew he had no right to want that; he was a stupid, disobedient, useless freak of nature who disappointed every owner he ever had, but... maybe just one thing? Just an older brother to get in between him and his nightmares; one who might, if Sam was a very good boy, call him Sammy and give him hugs. That would be nice.
Yeah, that would be more than enough for Sam.
