"Fullmetal—?" Mustang begins. A question in his voice. He probably wasn’t expecting Edward to come in, what with the rain and all. But Edward cuts him off, his brain circling.
"Where's Hawkeye?"
Mustang opens his mouth. But Edward's gaze snags on the medical kit, and the anxiety that flares in his chest is sudden and unreasonable and very, very familiar.
"Where's Hawkeye?" he repeats, frantic.
"Relax," Mustang says. "She has a fever. She’s been home—she's fine."
Fever. Edward registers the word. Registers the date, too, the way it sits at the back of his mind like something with weight. He doesn't feel relieved.
Or; Hawkeye is sick, and Edward can’t see anything else but the pale, fevered face of his mother and decides he won’t let it happen again.

Heinkel lifted up the kid’s underlying shirts and kept his face carefully still. Darius bit his tongue to keep from swearing.
Neither of them had extensive medical knowledge, only the basic field kind required in the military.
They didn’t need an expert opinion to be worried about the mess that was this kid’s torso.
The aftermath of Ed’s encounter with Kimblee in the Baschool mines leave him in critical condition. Darius and Heinkel are left to clean up the mess.

Ed’s spent a lot of time thinking about how he’ll die.
He thought, maybe, starvation at the height of the Ishvallan war, when food was scarce. Total annihilation when he faced Truth at the gate. Blood loss as he crawled across the basement floor of his childhood home. Even now, the threat of infected automail sits at the forefront of his mind. Joining the military hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park either, new threats coming in daily.
He never thought he’d go like this, though.
I feel like, as a fandom, we don't put as much focus on the Baschool arc as we should.

“No—get off—!” His voice cut off abruptly as cold steel slammed into his mouth—a muzzle.
A heavy ring forced his mouth open, pinning his tongue down. Thick leather straps bit into his jaw and buckled tight at the base of his skull.
