The specific workings of his quirk meant that heroism was out of the question for him. Becoming a villain wasn't even a consideration, either. For months, all he wanted to do was live a normal life, and to ignore the potential his quirk held.
One encounter would change that. If the monster couldn't bask in the light of day, then it would rid society's evils shrouded by night.

That lack of belief does not account for Izuku, the knowledge of him traded in back alleys and on shady Internet forums only in whispers. Izuku, who could take and give quirks. Izuku, who could be her salvation.
Izuku offered her a hand, reached out to her through the darkness and pulled her into the light. He smiled at her as he ripped the quirk she despised from her body. Of course she screamed, of course it hurt, but she smiled, too.
She doesn’t believe in heroes, but he believes in her.
