Summary
“Gorwin is my King,” Merlin says, golden eyes fixed flatly on Arthur. “And I work for him. That’s what it says.”
“That’s what what says?” Arthur all but roars, wishing he had a sword just so that he could swing it at something. He needs to let all of this anger at something, anything, he’s just not sure at what and he doesn’t really care anymore.
“The treaty you signed."
Or:
Arthur lends Merlin's aid as a sorcerer to an allied kingdom. He doesn't expect to find Merlin, two years later, in shackles, and only a mere echo of the person he used to be.

Summary
“The heavy bruising’s unfortunate, although I imagine a bit of makeup will cover it up for the state visit.”
“What state visit? And why am I involved?”
“Camelot is coming.” Cenred raises an eyebrow, waiting for Merlin’s response, but when nothing comes he continues, “Two weeks from now. They’ll be here for a month for treaty negotiations, and I want you serving.”
Well. That one’s new. “What if they recognise me?”
Cenred chuckles. “I don’t intend on you getting too close, Merlin. You’re to attend me during public events, that’s all. And they won’t recognise you. They think you’re dead, after all. But if you do anything, and I mean anything, to help them remember... well. Ealdor’s a dangerous place.” Merlin swallows, and he knows Cenred knows he understands. When an Essetirian patrol discovers Merlin’s magic on a visit home, he’s taken for the army – until Cenred discovers who he is and decides that he’d be more use to reveal Camelot’s secrets. A year later, presumed dead by everyone he loves, a delegation from Camelot visits Essetir for treaty negotiations.

Bookmarker's Notes
Merlin is a prisoner and servant to King Cenred. On his way to Camelot he had been kidnapped and taken in, however, he made matters worse by revealing his magic in an attempt to escape. Cenred holds the threat of hurting Hunith over Merlin's head to keep him in line. His magic is under Cenred's control through shackles. When given a command he has the will power to go through with it or not, but he always does because if he doesn't comply it may mean death for his mother.
Gwaine is on a side mission to discover Emry's true identity. Essetir is planning on overtaking Camelot and their best chance of survival is to take down the man who has kept Cenred thriving. He isn't able to get a look at him, but witnesses first hand the power that Emrys holds as he brings down lightning over the battlefield. Gwaine flees, traumatized over witnessing the bloodshed and death of a friend. What they don't expect when they finally get to him, is for him to be a young, thin, and frail lad.
Everyone has a hard time trusting him. However, someone fetches Gaius to look over the boy who just got sick and Merlin recognizes him. He tells Gaius who he is and he makes the connection to his supposed apprentice who never showed up. Arthur makes a deal with Emrys that if he helps save his mom, that he won't fight back and he eagerly accepts. Over time the Knights, and Arthur in particular begins to see his true side. When they realize that his mother is Hunith, who came to Camelot a year prior to stay with Gaius because of her loneliness, they confess to Merlin that he is safe, and thus his loyalty to Cenred is broken completely.
Still, Arthur doesn't believe Merlin enough to take off his cuffs. While he isn't necessarily afraid of magic itself, the immense power Merlin has isn't safe.

"I think I am getting a cold."
"Let’s hope it’s a bad one.”Arthur should learn to think before speaking. But he hadn't really wanted it to be a bad one. It had just been something he had blurted out without thinking, like so many other things he got to say to Merlin every day. That had to count. It wasn't a real wish. It wasn't.
But maybe the gods had thought otherwise.
Or:
What if Merlin had really become ill after Arthur said that in 05x03?

If there’s one thing Arthur is certain of, it’s that Merlin can be trusted completely. Then, one afternoon, Arthur walks in on Merlin about to steal money from his strongbox. The incident leaves Arthur with one burning question: Why, after two years of loyal service, would Merlin (almost) turn into a thief?

"His ears got cold first, then his fingers, but the worst was his neck. Merlin clenched his teeth to keep them from chattering and tried to think about food, about his mother, about his magic book, about anything beyond how cold he felt and how much he wished he had his neckerchief."

Summary
Merlin is tired. Tired of waiting. With every day that passed, his shoulders seemed to slump more and more, and exhaustion sunk into his bones. And still he waited for the day Arthur would return.
Merlin doesn't even know if he cares anymore. It's been too long. And it seems like the end is coming soon anyways, whether he wants it too or not. The once steady balance of magic is becoming precarious, and Merlin doesn't know if he can fix it. He doesn't even know if he should bother trying.
Or, what I imagine season 6 of the show would be like if Arthur came back and everyone was less emotionally constipated. -

Summary
When Merlin is caught trying to help a wrongly convicted man, Arthur claims responsibility and takes the punishment for him. While Merlin struggles to process what Arthur has sacrificed for him, Arthur finds himself having to reconsider his relationship with his father, his kingdom, and the people he has sworn to protect.
OR
The guards took this as their cue, and on Uther’s order Merlin felt his shirt torn from his body with a sound all too much like tearing flesh for comfort. Stood only in his worn brown breeches and weathered boots, he could feel for the first time how fiercely the sun beat down on his bare skin: how exposed he was, with nothing but air between his unprotected back and the whip.
And he was terrified.
It was then that another voice was raised above the crowd: one voice, in all that discontented hush, that dared to ring out above the rest.
“Father! It was me. I ordered him to do it.”

Bookmarker's Notes
An innocent old man is sentenced with the punishment to be locked in a cage for three days in the blazing sun with no food or water. He was accused of using magic to injure Morgana, a possible attempted murder. He isn't doing well and will surely die at the rate he is declining. Uther stated that if anyone was caught speaking to him, they'd switch places and take the remaining time in the cage. Merlin can't stand by and watch the man suffer. Thus, he purposefully makes a show of interacting wirh the man. The guards notify the king and Merlin is about to be flogged in the square when Arthur runs up claiming to be the one who told Merlin to help. Arthur is whipped and caged for the next two days. Apparently a stable hand by the name of Rhys had a brother named Roland who died over a decade before due to the same punishment. Arthur is the one that accidentally got his childhood friend into trouble and blames himself for Roland's death. All the pieces fell together for Rhys revenge. Arthur was supposed to lose the one he loved, being Merlin. Originally he tried to kill Morgana, believing that would be what ultimately hurt Arthur. Yet this plan failed, luckily for him he discovered in the tavern that Arthur had protected his servant many times and cares for him. At first Rhys seemed like a nice guy who had some conversations with Merlin, hiding his sorcerer identity. He gets Merlin in a position where he is choking him with a metal wire and goes to Arthur. He wants the prince to witness Merlin's death from his cage where he is powerless to prevent it. A guard stationed nearby finally notices the situation and helps intervene. There is a struggle going on, but all Arthur knows is that he later wakes up in his chambers. The King finds out that Merlin and Arthur ratted out the evil magic-user and uses the excuse that he didn't want to harm Arthur. It was all 'a plan' to get the sorcerer to show his true colors. Arthur is offended and filled with rage that his father would take his selfless and painful act and twist it into another anti-magic story. In the end, the townspeople see Arthur doing acts of service and understand his genuine humility. Merlin is proud of the man he has become and knows his friend will one day be the greatest king the world has ever known.

There’s something I can’t put my finger on.”Camelot's army captures Cenred's most feared soldier. They were expecting a fierce warrior, a tactical fighter, a man in complete control. They weren't expecting a man just out of boyhood, with scars and fear lurking at the back of his eyes.
