Summary
“Eighteen years ago, an earthquake ripped through Gotham City, and in the aftermath, instead of helping, the US government sealed the city under a ‘quarantine’ and left them to die. Two years later, when signs of life and even civilisation were still detectable inside the shattered city, the government sent the military in to reclaim and rehabilitate Gotham. Gotham has not forgotten, and they have not forgiven either.”
An AU where an altered version of No Man’s Land happened while Bruce was in his late teens/early twenties, and Batman was born in the hellish crucible of a trapped city that was left for dead and then violently retaken. Gotham may pretend to run by mainlander rules for the sake of those who would have died otherwise, but under the surface, Bruce, Jim, Leslie, Ivy and Oswald and their pack keep their own council, and look with jaundiced eyes on the mainland.

“Please, please, please, let me stay with you!” Zenitsu begs, clutching at Tanjirou’s haori, “I’ll die on my own! I will! I’ll die!”
Tanjirou is tempted to shove him away. To tell him that final selection is a competition, that it’ll do no good for Zenitsu to pass while mooching off of Tanjirou. Tanjirou’s also a bit worried that lugging around and guarding a person as seemingly helpless as Zenitsu will get both of them killed.
And yet…
He thinks of a couple of things. A memory of earlier that same night, of the corpses held in the demon’s hands, of the boy he barely managed to save in time. A memory of when he was younger and his mother had ordered his little siblings to stay close together as they went into town. What had she said back then?

Over the course of seven days, Tanjirou participates in the Final Selection to become a demon slayer. Over the course of seven days, Tanjirou forges a few unlikely friendships between his fellow participants. Over the course of seven days, Tanjirou fights many demons, some weak and some not.
