Ilya’s fingers dug into the desk he was leaning on. He watched Shane’s face. That beautiful fucking face. The one he had to force himself not to stare at on the ice in case he got distracted. The face he had known since he was eighteen years old. Whether Shane believed it or not, there were few people who could read his face like Ilya Rozanov could.
And he was reading the truth on it now.
‘Fuck. He hurt you?’

The collar settled around his throat again. The leather, firm and cool. The buckle, the brief pressure of Ilya's thumb. And then the soft, final click of it fastening shut—a small sound, almost nothing.

Galina has warned him it wouldn’t always be that way, that love isn’t a miracle drug. Ilya would nod his way through the lecture. Yes, he’s still sad sometimes when Shane is right there, but it’s easy to forget when Shane smiles at him, holds his hand just because, tells him I love you, drops to his knees.
Distractions, Galina would shake her head, disapproving and understanding at the same time. But Ilya really thought it’s enough, wanted to believe so badly that for him love does fix everything. He knows the crashes after seeing Shane are always the worst. So empty and meaningless, sadness a knife splitting him open until the void threatens to consume him, its ugly head baring teeth.
Ilya’s luck has run out.
Or: Ilya has a bad depressive episode when he's at the cottage with Shane.

The IV bag hung above him, clear liquid dripping slowly down the tube. Cisplatin, Dr. Lindberg had called it. A platinum-based chemotherapy drug. It would kill the cancer cells, but it would also make him sick.
Very sick, Dr. Lindberg had said, his tone gentle but honest. Nausea, vomiting, fatigue. Your hair will likely fall out. Your appetite will change. Some days will be harder than others.
Wilhelm had nodded like he understood.
He didn't, really. Not until now, sitting here with the slow drip of the IV burning a trail up his arm and the weight of his mother's silence pressing down on him.
