Summary
"Will," Henry sighs, "I helped destroy the neural lattice of an entire dimension. I’m not solving for X."
"Wow. So you can annihilate timelines, but Algebra II’s where you draw the line?"
"Frankly, it’s beneath me."
"Yeah? You say that, but I bet you don’t even know what a logarithm is."
Henry’s quiet for a beat. And then—
"…What is a logarithm?"Will laughs under his breath before he can stop it. The kid next to him gives him a weird look. Will pretends to cough and returns to staring at the graph paper like it personally offended him.

Summary
Will’s not supposed to be hiding in corners, forcing a fake smile when Mike asks him if he’s okay. He’s not supposed to brush off insults like they're jokes. He’s not supposed to vanish for six hours during a school day, leaving Mike feeling like he’s slipping away all over again.
Whoever said that beating Vecna’s going to fix Hawkins’ problems, Will’s problems, Mike’s problems—they deserve an earful. They deserve to feel this weird, hollow dissatisfaction chewing away at their chests.
aka mike begs will to escape their small town after too many run-ins with homophobic small-town bs. he knows will's meant to find himself elsewhere, but he never expects to find an answer to the age-old question of his own fate. prom, gay bars, sleazy hotels, train stations, two lesbians and their not-so-legal marriage - they aren't the traditional sources of wisdom, but he can't complain.

Summary
“I’m sorry,” Steve said. “I tried to make her wait until you woke up, I really did.” He tossed something in Mike’s direction, which Mike caught without thinking. “Happy birthday, by the way.”
Mike blinked. He’d completely forgotten, between Holly going missing, frantically searching for a way to get her back, and being possessed by Vecna himself. “Uh, thanks,” he said awkwardly, running a hand through his hair and looking down at what Steve had tossed at him. It was a Kit Kat bar. His favorite. He wondered how Steve knew that.
“Oh, right!” Robin darted forward and hugged him before he could react. He met Will’s eyes over her shoulder, but Will still had a hand covering his mouth and his expression was unreadable, aside from the red on his cheeks. “Happy birthday! There’s a surprise waiting for you in the kitchen. Anyway—mind reading. Totally a thing now, right?”
--
Through "the power of best friendship," as Robin puts it, Mike and Will develop a telepathic connection when Vecna tries to take Mike. Neither of them are really upset by it, especially when it gives them the opportunity to finally destroy Vecna once and for all.

“What are we doing?” Mike asks again, rubbing his wrist and scowling, but she can see the curious way he’s eyeing her skateboard. He can’t fool her—she was there in the gym, too. He might not want to admit it, but he was impressed with her skateboarding skills, if not with Max herself.
“We aren’t doing anything,” she says, nudging the skateboard towards him with one dirty sneaker. “You’re gonna get all your nervous energy out, and I’m going to watch to make sure you don’t break my board.”
(or, max tries to teach mike wheeler how to skateboard and get him to be her friend, to varying degrees of success.)

When Will had invited her — he still can’t remember her name, and he’s beginning to feel a little bad about it — over tonight, he’d hoped that he could calm the storm brewing within him, the longing that’s gotten so acute it’s painful to be around Mike, sometimes.
He’d hoped that she would help, but not — not because he was horny, or whatever. Will’s thought process — one he was maybe starting to regret a little, actually, but it was much too late now — had been that if he could kiss the same lips Mike had kissed, it would be like kissing Mike.

Summary
“You—” Will starts, head automatically shooting up to where Mike peers around the door, headphones slung over one ear, hair cut short the way Will was used to before a week of flurry and unspoken panic and reckless driving and air stale with dread and Nevada sun bright like drying paint on his hunched shoulders, dancing in his eyes, but I— I don’t believe it. Will, spilling his guts in a mess of half truths swallowed by the desert rolling steadily past the windows. Barren, ochre-yellow nothing by the mile, perforated here and there with skeletal shrubs. “Sorry, I thought you were Jonathan.”
“That’s a new one.”
“What, are you keeping track?”
Mike huffs out a sharp laugh, eyebrows raising. He’s pretty. God, he’s really pretty. “Obviously.”

Mike’s gotta be cursed.
It was fine. For the first time in ages, Mike’s life seemed to be on an upward trajectory instead of plummeting downwards. College had, in some way, fixed things. Fixed Mike. He didn’t even feel the need to dissect what exactly had made his early teenage years so horrifying.
But like a curse, it’s all come back.

Summary
“So obviously Derry was fucking batshit,” Eddie says.
Richie hums in an affirmative tone, determined to keep his mouth shut.
The rest all comes out to the signature rapid-fire Kaspbrak beat.
“I’m not good at talking about shit but I talked to Stan and he said a therapist was probably a good idea so I got one and I figured some things out and you wouldn’t talk to me and you didn’t answer your fucking phone, but you said – you said I could come visit anytime, before we all went home, and if you didn’t mean it you’re a real fucking asshole, because I’m here now and I didn’t really have anywhere else to go or stay because I’m, because,” He sighs and drags his left hand down his face, conscious of his scar, and Richie clocks something before his brain catches up, “Because I got divorced. Also, I’m gay.”
(Or: Eddie shows up on Richie's doorstep. You know the drill.)

"I seriously think you need to get your head checked," Eddie finally responded, and somehow Richie could tell he was smiling, "-Were you fucking dropped as a baby? Multiple times?"
"As much as I would love to answer your question, Spaghetti," Richie responded, in a prim proper voice, "-I am not at liberty to know. You see, dear Eduardo, when I was mayhaps dropped, I would've been a baby-"
"Eduardo?" Eddie commented, and Richie could nearly see him scrunch up his nose in disgust.
"First you say, don't call me Eddie dickweed," Richie lists off, "-then you say that's not my name, I don't like it, they're stupid-"
"They are stupid, dickweed," he replied, "-but I like them. For some weird fucking reason."
Richie felt his heart flutter in his chest, before asking, "How does that make sense?"
"You're stupid," Eddie added -a little too nonchalantly, "-and I like you."

“I need you.”
Will’s expression grows more stunned. “What?” he breathes, voice barely above a whisper.
His instincts tell him to take it all back, but the way that Will’s looking at him with those sorrowful, questioning eyes weakens him. And he’s been stupid for many, many years, so what’s a little more stupidity?

“D’you ever consider I did it on purpose? I am a bit of an attention-seeker, you know.” Perhaps Mike is drunker than Will initially thought.
“What?”
“How else could I get the chance to talk to you alone?” Will feels like the air was just knocked out of him. Of course Mike is joking, but there’s a hint of truth to the statement. He was looking for ways to get Will alone. Will isn’t sure whether this information excites him or terrifies him.
“You’re nutty,” Will says, physically shaking the worries from his head.
“Maybe so,” Mike says, “but it worked.”

Oh. Right. The boy. The boy who, by now, has noticed Mike, and Mike looks up just in time to see him pop into his field of vision, a curious look on his face.
"Are you okay?" he asks, peering down at Mike, then glancing up at the fence, then looking down at him again with obvious amusement. "That was quite a drop."
Okay. So maybe Mike is dead, after all. "Um," he says intelligently, flushing pink and following the boy's gaze to the fence, "Yeah, I- I'm fine."
The boy's smirk widens, and he nods slowly, extending a hand. "You live up there?" he asks, nodding to the house above them, and Mike nods as he cautiously accepts the hand being offered. "And you just, what, make a habit of falling onto other people's property?"
"Well, I wouldn't say that," Mike huffs, regaining some of his brain power, and the boy grins widely and gives his arm a sharp tug, pulling him to his feet in one swift motion. Mike stumbles, nearly falling over again, and the boy catches him with a steadying hand on his shoulder.
mike falls off of a fence, learns about signs from the universe, and meets a boy. not necessarily in that order.

I love you so much,” Will whispers, cradling his body to his chest.

He didn’t really understand why someone would want to go to a cemetery for a birthday party, but hey, maybe Will was a bit of a weird kid.
“Hey Will.” Mike called, his voice gentler than he had ever heard it.
He whipped his head around, scanning the rows for another figure, desperately looking for Will. It didn’t really click until Mike stepped forward and knelt beside a grave, placing his perfectly imperfect cake in front of a well-kept headstone.
Oh.
Will Byers is dead.
So how the hell did he end up stuck haunting Mike Wheeler's basement?

“Jesus Christ,” Mike mutters. “Where the hell did you come from?”
“I’ve been here all night, Wheeler,” Murray replies, sipping what Mike is sure is one of the liquors his parents hide in his father’s office.
“Really?” He definitely wasn’t there when he and Will were cleaning the dishes. Was he?
“Yes. I guess you’ve been too distracted flirting with your boyfriend to notice.”
Mike’s heart jumps to his throat as his hands grip the bag so tightly that he almost rips it open
He looks at Murray and sees nothing on his face to indicate what he’s thinking, and realises he’s probably not thinking at all if he thought saying those words was the right thing to do.
“We’re not-what?!”or
An unexpected talk with Murray leaves Mike to ponder over the earth-shattering feelings he has for Will.

Mike stared at him, hoping for an inkling of clarity, but it never came. It never did. Being around Will only ever made things more confusing.
“Yeah, whatever, man.”
As he began to walk away, Will said something behind him, his voice nearly inaudible under the all of the noise. Arcade games squealed, teenagers chattered, skates rolled and scraped around in the rink. They all seemed to stop when Will’s words registered in his mind:
“Well, what about us?”
Somewhere between a long drive through the desert, a death curse, and his hometown falling apart, Mike Wheeler is faced with the reality of his feelings for his best friend.

“Sometimes you need to fall.”
Will looked at him, his eyes scanning Mike as he thought.
“God, Mike, that’s a pretty fatalistic point of view.”
“Why?” He chuckled. “I mean it, you know, you gotta hit rock bottom to start getting back up for real.”
The past year things had been… weird, in many ways. And apparently for Mike is just going to keep being weird: this time he is doing everything right. After the gates opening in Hawkins the entire town was evacuated, and Mike suddenly found himself living far away from all his friends.
But he keeps in touch, they have a routine. He is doing everything right, but El is the one pushing away now.
And Mike feels lost, away from everything he thought he once understood. Never so alone since it all started.
At least Will and him are talking again.

Summary
The Wheeler’s lakehouse was a two-story wooden building with white siding and blue shutters on each of the little windows. It sat on the edge of a large blue-green lake, a long backyard full of tall tufted grass that ended in a wooden dock extending out over the water. Will had been to the Wheeler’s lakehouse twice as a child, once when he was eight and again when he was sixteen. Now, he was twenty-nine and pulling up to the long driveway of the house in his beaten-up Ford Escort, his stomach in nervous knots that he was trying to calm with a half-full can of ginger ale.
