It's been two years since the Battle of Hogwarts. Voldemort's tyranny is over. All the remaining Death Eaters are in hiding, in Azkaban or living out their days under the watchful eye of the Ministry. Not one person expected Narcissa Malfoy to plead to Minister Kingsley not to send her sister back to Azkaban, even after she and Bellatrix had fled from the battle that night. Narcissa Malfoy didn't beg. The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black didn't plead.
It was enough, Bellatrix Black was to be put under house arrest at Black Manor when at home and was working towards rebuilding Hogwarts when not. Headmistress McGonagall had already mourned her once favourite student. She was lost. She had gone down a dark path. Dumbledore didn't believe that she would ever come back to the light, even for all his faith in Snape. But Minerva was willing to try, she believed the war had taken enough. She would help mend the Black sisters if she could and she knew just who could help them. Although she feared Miss Granger might hate her for what she was about to do...

She had one, and only one option left to her, after exhausting every possibility. Everything was hinging on one mad plan to save her own life from the curse that she could feel creeping closer to her heart by the day- And that plan was one insane Bellatrix Black.
Oh, there was very little hope. Or any hope at all, really, but it was a Necessity. Just like the war became Necessity, after all hope had gone, and Hermione would be damned if she didn't do what was necessary.

Hermione can feel the mark buzzing, pulsing, beating in time with the veins at her temples. She can sense its malevolence feeding off of her resentment, looping back around and fueling her anger in turn, but doesn't even try to differentiate between her own anger and the negative emotions ebbing out of the curse itself. Hermione is fully aware that her face has twisted into a vicious, hateful sneer; she can see how surprised Bellatrix is to see such an expression on her. The hatred from the mark pours into her, fills her veins, demands to be spoken aloud.
"Whatever those consequences were," Hermione whispers with enough open malice to power a sanity-shattering Crucio if she'd wanted to cast one, "they weren't enough."
