Harry's 5th year was probably the worst year of his life. First Voldemort happened, then Umbridge, then Voldemort AGAIN, and then Sirius died. Harry doesn't even have the time to properly mourn Sirius before he's shipped back to the Dursley's for the summer. He can't even think straight and with each passing day since losing Sirius, Harry feels more and more exhausted. By the time his 16th birthday rolls around, Uncle Vernon has to literally beat Harry just to wake him up.
After a rather brutal beating given to him by his uncle on the eve of his birthday, Harry wakes to find something he had never thought possible. He wakes up to find a long snake tail instead of his legs. A few days later, his family abandons him in some random forest.
What a wonderful way to start his 16th year of life after the worst year of his life.

Summary
Silver-Furred Sled Dogs is a novel about rehabilitating a former human who got turned into a female dog against his will.
In an industrial revolution setting where other "animalfolk" (of which he has now become) are captured and treated as pets, Levvy, right out of high school, was kidnapped by his ex-girlfriend as punishment for an affair, and kept in an abandoned factory. Transformed, he was subjected to all torture she deemed fit.
Now, 6 years later, he's freed, but not from his animal form. Nor from the physical, psychological, and sexual abuse.
He remembers only half of his identity and almost none of his independence. He still believes he is being punished for his cheating, and will forever be his ex-girlfriend's pet.
The person who comes to take care of him in this state is the very girl he had an affair with. Which leads him to believe this is just another wicked test meant to tame him. A test to make sure he's a good dog. Another test for him to fail. She, however, is dedicated to making him feel like a person again, half-dog or not. Fueled by love, and a bit of guilt, she brings him to a secluded village where animalfolk can live. There, he starts unraveling what's happened to him.
