He could do this. Hayden and Jackie managed to raise four kids decently well, and if Montreal’s fifteenth best player could be successful, so could he, even if his situation had been ramped up to max difficulty.
Hundred of millions of people did this everyday. Most of those people managed to raise fairly normal kids, and, sure, his situation was sort of unique, but it wasn't one of a kind. There were books and forums and experts he could consult. And, of course, his Shane would help him along the way. Ilya could make it work.
It couldn't be that hard. Right?

Alexei and his wife die in a drug-induced car crash, leaving Ilya's niece in his custody.
