Summary
Eugene calls him the next night and waits while Yasper asks his mother if he can have a friend spend the night on Saturday. She says yes. Then, when Yasper sees Aniq on Thursday, Aniq also floats the idea of hanging out on Saturday. Yasper has to explain that he’s already got plans with Eugene. “Really?” Aniq says. “Why?”
Yasper doesn’t know how to answer. Why does he like Eugene? He’s not sure he does. Except he must like him, otherwise why would he have invited him over?
Being a teenager is hard.

Summary
The audacity of being corrected by a third-rate actor on his own character’s motivations froze Nathan in place. He didn’t know what to say. “It’s not a happy book,” he told Finn.
“I didn’t say it was.”
“Who the hell are you?” Nathan demanded.
“I’m the guy they hired to pretend to be you,” Finn said.
Nathan meets the actor portraying his Peep World alter-ego and learns some things about himself that will upend his entire life.

Summary
It had been that kind of a friendship: two people alternately obsessed and annoyed with one another. Aniq remembered how Eugene had always laughed the loudest at Yasper’s jokes, had always wanted Yasper’s opinion on everything, and had often changed his tastes to suit Yasper’s. Eugene tried to sit beside Yasper in every class they shared. Eugene gave Yasper expensive presents for his birthday that Yasper always looked vaguely embarrassed by. Yasper and Eugene slept over at each other’s houses almost every weekend.
Well, they were adults now. Presumably any sleepovers would look very, very different.
Yasper takes a fall. Xavier takes responsibility. Together they make everyone else uncomfortable.

Summary
Being able to make numbers do what he wanted ensured that Clyde was recruited into a bullshit job right out of business school. That didn’t bother him. With enough of the correct kind of education and just the right level of ambition, it was inevitable that he would have a job that didn’t add any particular value to the world. If you rose high enough, you became superfluous. The trick, then, was pretending that you were not a leech on society.
He was a leech, of course, but he worked so fucking hard at it.
Clyde has never been honest with anyone in his life, not even himself. But self-delusion can’t last forever.

”What’s up with him?” Brett asks, jerking his thumb in the direction of the pool.
“He’s mad,” Xavier says. “Was he doing flips again?”
“Yeah.”
“We’re having a fight.” Xavier flashes a quick look up at Brett. “He’ll get over it.”
Yasper and Xavier’s relationship has a lot of room for improvement. Luckily, Brett has nothing better to do after his divorce than run interference.

Summary
The story of how Teddy got into management consulting begins with a bank robbery gone wrong, gets kicked into action thanks to some pissed off cartel freaks, features a shocking-but-not-as-shocking-as-it-should’ve-been lack of support from his mother, zig zags between various shootouts at gas stations across the country, involves several stolen trucks and Molotov cocktails, features the two weeks he spent pretending to be a cop that were as ironic as they were surprisingly homoerotic, takes a shocking-but-not-as-shocking-as-it-should’ve-been turn towards cannibalism, drags through another repetitive bout of near-death experiences, meanders during a long undercover stint in Mexico, and climaxes with a sitcom-level identity switcheroo at a tech conference in Cabo that lands him on a plane headed straight to Galweather Stern. Told in its entirety, the whole tale is confusing, depraved, largely felonious, and more than a little embarrassing, so Teddy usually just tells people the short version: he did a lot of cocaine in his twenties.
