When Joel finally does come home, it's to receive word that his kid is missing and so he heads right back out to go find her before she runs into danger. Because if there's one thing they can both agree on, it's that the world outside the walls of Jackson is stock-full of dangers.

Even when she grew older, she was always the first one in the pool, and he had to watch her like a hawk on their few beachtrips to make sure her enthusiasm didn’t overcome her sense in how far out she should swim.

Summary
What if Ross hadn't been lying and Abigail really was killed in a prison riot a week before Dutch's death?
That's the situation John Marston finds himself in after watching Dutch commit suicide. He manages to shoot his way out of trouble after killing Edgar Ross in retaliation, but with Jack sent to an unknown orphanage, Uncle dead, and Beecher's Hope reduced to ashes, he has nowhere to go except for MacFarlane's Ranch. Thankfully, Bonnie and her father agree to let him stay and hide him from the law, but John has lost his wife, the thing he loves most.
Now a broken man, he begins work as a ranch hand for the MacFarlanes while keeping his head down and plotting how to find and rescue Jack. The only problem is that rescuing Jack might lead the law right to him, and he can't put the MacFarlanes in danger after their kindness towards him. To complicate things further, John is starting to develop feelings for Bonnie he can't seem to shake.

It prickled along his skin, setting it aflame with sparks of energy, and it perpetually left his hackles raised when he could scent the savage's mere scent. A thrumming, throbbing presence like the headache of whiskey-days and hefty-punches, left bruised inside and out and yet feeling utterly placated. That's what the fight did to you. Burned out all the emotion, the feeling you couldn't grasp at with any turn of tongue. There was only fingers curled into claws, teeth bared and sharp, eyes blazing and snarls a coughing, staggering drumbeat to the hits meant to wound. Meant to pain. Meant to wrought the other with agony. To batter into some semblance of submission- ah, yes, that was one of the good parts. But, regardless of who came out with the least lost, you always came out better.
But the coyote was a constant threat.
Javier was a constant threat.
