He was cut off by Charlie heaving himself out of the chair and dropping into Nick’s lap, wrapping his arms around his husband’s neck. “It’s been a very long, involved, opinionated discussion,” he said, before pressing a kiss to Nick’s cheek. “We’re all tired and need a break.”
“No luck yet then?” James asked as he sat in the chair Charlie had just vacated.
Charlie shook his head at his ex before looking up at the ceiling as if he was asking the universe for more patience. “Nope.”

Summary
Charlie Spring endures constant and horrific bullying during Year 9 after being outed as gay. He tries to ignore it. Tries to not let it get to him. Tries to ignore all the sneers and harsh words thrown at him day in and day out. But it hurts. It gets to him. He slowly becomes more and more a shell of himself, becomes more and more angry, until one day he just snaps. He gets in an all out brawl with the guys who just won't leave him alone and winds up hitting his breaking point, having a complete mental breakdown. Everything changes that day. He's angry, pissed off, and he can't hold it in anymore. He builds a wall of defense around himself made out of violence and anger, shoving all his other emotions and personality down in order to protect himself.
Until Nick Nelson comes along and completely shatters everything he thought he knew, and forces him to start feeling again.

Isaac: Tao even lets him sit with us at lunch sometimes now, that's how bad it got.In which Charlie's friend group adopted his impossible straight boy crush while he was in hospital, and now he might just have to deal with the fact that Nick is…maybe not so impossible after all.
(Canon divergence AU: Charlie already has a proper boyfriend when he first meets Nick in year 10. It changes some things. They still get there eventually.)
