And yeah, so what. Ed hasn’t been held in longer than he can remember. It’s not like it’s gonna kill him, right?
“It’s not going to kill you, no. But humans are social creatures, we’re not meant to go without loving touch for that long. It’s bad for our brains.”
“Okay, and? What am I supposed to do about that? Just scour the city until I find one of those ‘free hugs’ people and hope they’re not a complete weirdo?”
“No, but there are professional services you can go to, if you don’t feel comfortable initiating that kind of contact with people closer to you.”
“Professional—I thought you said that wasn’t what you meant? If I just want to bone down, I can find someone at a bar or whatever. No offence to the many sex workers who are providing an invaluable service to this city, obviously.”

Summary
They’ve lived here on the island for half a year, and Ed is happy, of course he is. He wakes up in Stede’s arms more often than not, and on the “not” days Stede is usually up making him tea or arranging fresh flowers on the nightstand.
But every so often Ed catches himself holding his breath. He’ll be looking at Stede in the candlelight and be struck, as if by lightning, with the hurt of that night on the dock, when he waited for Stede until the sun rose. In those moments, Ed feels the world go off-kilter, like he’s looking up at his life from underwater.
While out thrifting for furniture and decorations for the inn, Ed comes across a painting that leads him on a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance.

Stede is dreaming.
He rarely remembers his dreams; his father would say that he spends so much of his awake life dreaming that his sleeping mind has no need to provide more material. But sometimes, a dream breaks through. This time, he’s dreaming of Neverland. It’s an old favourite, and it used to feature more heavily in his dreams when he was a child. He used to be able to see it in great detail, back then. But the map of Neverland that he holds in his mind is locked away in that box, with his Belief, safe and secure, never to be looked at. He only has a dim recollection now. It’d sharpened into focus for a short while, when Alma had gone through her pirate phase a few years ago. But she, unlike her father, had done the proper thing and left it behind as she grew.
But tonight? Tonight it’s so clear that he can smell it. There’s brine, and gunpowder, and adventure.

Stede draws his attention back to the head massage, alternating pressure from the kind of bruising that’s enough to knead a migraine away, to gentle, delicate strokes through his hair. A quick glance at the clock reveals it’s been far, far longer than three-to-five minutes.
Stede doesn’t mind, obviously. And Ed doesn’t seem to be about to question it. But the snide little Lucius-like voice in the back of his mind points out that almost twenty fucking minutes is maybe a bit of an overkill.
Stede yanks his hands away from Ed’s hair like it’s covered in bleach.
“Okey-doke!” Stede manages, voice shrill and a little strangled.
From across the salon, the real Lucius snorts.
