Dream glances over at George; how beautiful he looks in the evening glow, resting his head against the window and gazing out at the steady rain. Dream mourns when he has to tear his eyes away to guide the car around a bend.
He speaks softly into the quiet: “You doing okay?”
George sighs and looks over. “I should be asking you that.”
And Dream almost crumbles, right there under George's gaze—all fond and concerned and gentle as always. “I can still worry about you," he says quietly. "You know that I do.”

Against all odds, the first thing George notices is the air. Thick, humid. Hot. It was raining in London just a second ago. This doesn’t feel like rain air.
“Dream?” he asks in a broken voice—a broken voice he doesn’t recognize as his own. “Dream.”
“George, what—” He’s stunned into silence. George hears the gears turning; the world caving in on itself. “What the—”
“We body-swapped,” George explains, because he seems to be the only one with a grasp on the situation they’re in, however flimsy. “You’re in London.”
On loneliness and distance, but above all else, on the agony of being known—inside, out, and all around.

He doesn’t feel it until he’s in bed, chin pressed into the hardness of his uncomfortable pillow. He opens a video. He listens. He listens to Dream’s laughter, wheezing and breathless. He listens to the dips of turns of his voice, and it burns something deep in the pit of his stomach. It swallows him whole.
He’s here, following or chasing or being dragged down by Dream into a rabbit hole where everything is bigger and everything is scarier. His body is too small to contain it all.

Dream misses someone.
It’s the type of missing that makes him feel like he is stuck in limbo. That he’s been there for seven years. That he’s been looking at the world through a window, fog eating the sights and rain racing each other to see who can finish first. It feels like he is just existing while everyone is doing something with their lives around him. But that's the thing… It doesn't make sense.
It doesn't make sense because how can someone miss someone they’ve never met?

“Are you sure he’s fine?” George asks. He doesn’t turn around, unable to tear his eyes away, but he knows Dream’s mom is still standing in the doorway.
“Honey,” she says softly, “he’s comfortable, I promise. And completely knocked out.”
George’s eyes sting and his throat aches. He tugs at the sleeves of his hoodie, pulling them down over his hands and resisting the urge to reach out and touch Dream. “But, um—” George bites his lip, feeling guiltier each time he doubts the knowledge of Dream’s mother—an experienced nurse. He exhales shakily and turns to look at her. “But he’s—he’s frowning. What if he’s in pain? What if the medication isn’t working and—?”
[Or, Dream is recovering from surgery and George won't leave his side.

Dream felt his heart drop out of his being. It was on the floor now, beside him, slowing with its pumping, crimson spilling over the marbled tile.
As they wheeled George through the doors, Dream tried to barge through, hold his hand for the first time despite how he was, and escort him through being cut open, drained, fixed, cut deeper, and sewn back together. And he would be there as he was placed into his own room, cozy (disregarding the overall setting), and Dream would be there.

Dream doesn’t meet George’s eyes when the door is pulled open — gaze down, cheeks flushed. His hair is large and free, curling around his forehead and ruffled with humidity, and his hands are hidden in his pockets.
“Hey—”
He looks up, and he’s ruined, waterline rimmed red and lip trembling. In one clumsy movement, he collapses in a desperate hug around George.
Dream and George are having a rough time, but they have each other, and they'll be alright.

“Was outside,” Dream says. He holds George tighter and rubs his palm up and down his back. “Phone call with Ken.”

And Dream just doesn’t have an answer for that. No, he thinks, and I don’t know if it’s ever going to be. “I don’t wanna talk about it,” he mutters, burying his face in George’s hair.

He stares at it for a second or two, making sure that his eyes aren’t playing tricks on him, before looking up to see Dream peering at him from under the doorway that probably leads to wherever they're supposed to go. Dream’s eyelids are hooded and his mouth is quirked in a smile that tells George he’s about to be in trouble.
