Wilbur pivots a half-step to the side, twisting his shoulders away from Tommy, looking out over the pond, the ducks in the water with their fluffed-up feathers, the pigeons slowly fluttering down to the pavement and strutting around his feet like old friends. For an absurd moment, Tommy wonders if the birds know his brother better than he does.
“Yeah, well,” Wilbur says stiffly, voice straining for nonchalance and falling dramatically short, “I lied.”

Summary
Phil had had a certain image in his head when the police had knocked on his door informing him that a shapeshifter had been caught living as a dog in the local park and that said shapeshifter had recently used Phil's 14-year-old son's visage for purposes unknown. Yet, upon going to confront this shapeshift, instead of what he'd expected, he found a terrified 7-year-old racoon hybrid. When Phil was told they were struggling to find someone to foster him after all of the stunts he'd pulled, there was really only one thing Phil could do.
Tommy is not particularly enthused to be fostered by the man whose son's face he'd stolen. Foster families were bad enough without already having a reason to hate him and without a lock on his powers. There was no kind reason Phil would want him in his custody. He just needs to figure out what type of bad it will be.
(Yes, I'm writing a story with the same basic premise once again. Yes, I am doing so in a genre that is oversaturated on this site. No, I will not apologize.)

Wolf tracks in the snow, leading toward the edge of the forest. Phil held his hunting rifle firm, circled around to investigate them more closely: two sets of prints, both smaller than his stretched fingers, likely not full grown. One following after the other. Not covered by the snow flurry, either, which meant they’d passed by that morning at the earliest.
Phil glanced around, then knelt and tugged off a glove, touching a fingertip to the indents in the snow. His magic tingled through him like a rush of hot chocolate in his veins, wonderfully warming. He blinked, shook his head a little, cast the spell again. Received the same result.
Not the average timberwolves, then. Werewolves.

"Don't do anything to him," Tommy manages, heartbeat throbbing and throbbing. "Please."
Wilbur frowns, but it's Techno who steps forward. "Tommy, he's not going to do anything," Techno tells him cautiously. "You don't need to worry, alright?"
To you, Tommy would say, if he was stronger. He's not going to do anything to you.
But he doesn't. Tommy keeps his mouth shut—whatever it takes to stay.
When Techno and Wilbur Soot-Watson anger a bully, it shouldn't be an issue. They are as untouchable as they can get, for students anyway.
It's unfortunate that Tommy, their foster brother, isn't. Being their soft spot, it only makes sense that he becomes the next target.

Summary
Tommy dove after the figure almost before he hit the water, eeling through the harsh currents to get him before he bashed his brain out on the rocks. He didn’t bother being circumspect about it, either; the people on the ship hadn’t seen him hiding on the beach at all, being too busy tying someone up and shoving him into the frozen shallows. They’d turned away as soon as the guy went under, ship heading back out to sea.
The stranger was barely swimming when Tommy reached him, too busy jerking against the restraints binding his wrists. Tommy circled him, but the guy didn’t seem to register his presence until Tommy bumped him with his snout; then he flinched back, eyes unfocused and dazed in the water.
Tommy fixed his teeth in the back of the stranger’s shirt and dragged him up to air, making a beeline home.

Summary
His gaze passes over an old photograph and he immediately averts his eyes, deciding to instead resume his staring out the window.
He’s had that photo up forever, but he hasn’t yet brought himself to take it down. It was taken during a simpler time, and it’s one of the few evidences he has that such a time ever existed. The image of himself, Karl and Quackity giving stupid grins to the camera hurts to look at, but if there’s no pain, then there might as well not be any good either, right?
Thinking about the photograph and its carefree subjects gives an odd twist to Sapnap’s gut, so he tries not to think about it. He tries not to think about how empty Kinoko’s streets are, how few people from that happier time he has left. He doesn’t think about how everybody he ever loved either hates him, is corrupted or imprisoned, or sleeping.

Sapnap and Quackity were sure that their relationship was irreparable, but when Karl loses a life and comes back without any memory of either of them, they're forced to navigate a new normal.
Nobody does a perfect job at adjusting.

He had spent nights making up scenarios of what Karl was like. A tyrant who only wanted to marry Sapnap to gain access to their large army. A dictator who wanted Sapnap’s hand to have control over their money. An oppressor who had nefarious plans and only hatred in his heart.
Instead Karl was sweet, he was pure. He held back on swearing but when he got mad at his novels or his paintings for not turning out how he wanted them too he had a mouth worse than Quackity and Sapnap combined. He was good with children and ventured out often to meet with the townspeople, helping with their orphanages and food drives.
Karl was perfect, and he was perfect for Sapnap.
And wasn’t that just the issue?

Summary
Tommy looks at the ceiling with stars in his eyes. He thinks of Tubbo and how much he misses him, and that kid from the ice-cream shop, Wilbur, and his brother and their sad smiles. He thinks of how much of a cool dad Phil must be to let his kids swear in front of him, and he wishes he could swear in front of Dream, or just breathe without being smacked around.
Tommy knows this isn't how people are supposed to treat their foster kids but maybe he's like one of Pavlov's dogs, because when the hand on his hair is gentle enough, he's been trained to understand that means the punishment is over. Dream is letting him off easy and he starts to patch up his injuries and this - this is the reward, and Tommy's stuttered apologies come naturally.
He's a fighter most of the time; just maybe not today.
