Summary
Even though it’s only been eight years, it feels like Steve hasn’t been home in decades. He half expects the buildings rising around him to be futuristic sci-fi buildings and floating maybe, or at least bright purple. The music coming through his earbuds – comfort music playlists he compiled as a teenager and never bothered to outgrow – is enough to calm him momentarily; he is still, all ten fingernails left alone and unchewed, but it will only last so long.
(alternately known as, what if Steve's sense of alienation and returning followed him across every universe, and what if in this one, Bucky played the cello.)

As part of the King's Horsemen, it's on Bucky and his Commandos to protect their people. Deadly on their horses' backs and faster than the Royal Guard, there's no better team to investigate rumours of a sorcerer. Skeletal and crimson-skinned, or so the rumours say. The magic sorcerers use is different than the common Talents most have, and it twists them almost beyond recognition if not respected. A sorcerer showing up would be bad news for everybody.
Luckily nothing has turned up so far in their investigations. At least he gets a horse out of it, right?

Based on a Russian folk story and Pulitzer Prize finalist book The Snow Child.

Yelena can tell, too. "As good as he was in the Void?" she asks.
"That wasn't him." Bucky shakes his head and looks down at the sandwich clenched in his metal hand. He had nightmares again for weeks after that. "Steve was... he was my best friend. He was my family."
Yelena closes one eye and squints at him. “Family like the wife or family like the brother?”
Bucky makes a face and shoves her so hard she cackles and drops the pickle slice she was about to put in her mouth.
