Ilya felt his heart fall into his stomach, afraid of the next words to come out of his Coach’s mouth.
“We asked the rookies who they’d like to live with and, well, LaPointe wanted to board with you, Chouinard. And Young with you, Bood,” Wiebe then turned to Ilya who had frozen on the spot, “And Roz, Haas wants to live with you.”
Bood and Chouinard chuckled as they watched Ilya’s eyes widen in horror.

Shane swung his legs around after setting his book down on the coffee table. Heart already pounding in his ears, he lifted his eyes to see Ilya’s gaze catch on his book. “Good, it is fresh in your brain.”
“Wait, what?” His brain struggled to adjust quickly enough. They were going to study Russian. Obviously. Now Shane felt like a pervert.
Before he laid back, Ilya had begun to settle on the outside edge of the couch, hand already creeping up the skin of Shane’s chest until he could tug his shirt off over his head. Ilya was barely bigger than him, but the Raiders tee slipped off of him easily, stretched out from a decade's worth of careless washing. His voice was low and warm. “по-русски Щенок.”

Shane isn’t learning Russian as quickly as he wants to, Ilya’s a great teacher.

Summary
After I badgered my brother into reading 'Role Model' (he loved it, naturally), he told me how grateful he was to have a family like Harris. Even though I love 'The Long Game', I often find myself thinking about what could've happened if Shane had been able to ease into his coming out. Which is where I got this idea.
What if Rose convinces Shane to come to out to his team in the days after his confession to her? It probably doesn't go well. At least not at first.
After the horrors of the club in Montreal, before the 2017 All-Star game, Shane and Rose make a plan for Shane to come out to his team and his loved ones. Things do not go to plan. But then Shane's friends and family, and eventually Ilya Rozanov, come together to make sure Shane has full control of how and when he comes out. Some hurt and yearning. Some stupidity. But ultimately a HEA.Note that some AU's of Shane's coming out have graphic homophobic language. This fic does not. It's implied. There's absolutely some homophobia. But I see no need to use hurtful language to communicate an experience too many have had.
Mix of TV and book canon!
Spelling is mix of UK/US, soz. I don't use genAI; em dashes are all MINE!
