With people online talking about what happened to him like fiction, it's hard for Avery to remember what's real. Or if Derek is even alive.
Maybe he really isn’t real. What if his whole world is a lie, just like Derek said? What if he is fictional – as in, completely fictional; as in, words on a page; as in, a video on a screen? He looks at his hands but he’s still looking at them with his eyes. If a puppet were to come to life and see its strange little body, would it have the capacity to reason that its eyes were made of wood, too? Could it look at itself objectively enough to know that it does not have a heart, or a liver, or lungs?
