There was a purpose to everything that he did, and his rise to fame as the "second-generation Detective Prince" was no exception. His relationship to the original might have appeared to have been conjured up by his fans for the sake of relevancy, but the truth was not so simple.
After (unfortunately) resurfacing from the defeat of one Takuto Maruki, Akechi is forced to go through the skeletons hiding in his closet and face them one by one. Perhaps there really was no rest for the wicked.
