He could see how she was slowly warming up to him, smiling a bit- though subtly- laughing with him, he could feel them growing close again like they were when he was young. But, for some reason, at the same time she sent him on a mission to stop a boy from reaching the Eternal Library, she began to slip back into her old ways and they must both come to terms with the fact that healing isn’t linear.

Two friends, best friends, live together in a cabin the the woods. They don’t have much, a cottage to keep them warm during the winter, a garden and workshop where they produce potions to sell, and each other. One day, Ulla discovers two magical-looking heartshaped rocks in the stream that Donella crafts into matching necklaces. After a dreadful storm that destroyed their garden, the two are gifted a magical mirror and meet the girl trapped inside. Suddenly they are thrown into a world of dragons, evil magic, and a long lost Eternal Library which they must open together.

Everyone caught a glimpse into the ‘what if’ when she woke up in Corona, completely unaware of the pain in her past. To her the last decade was filled with subtle pining with her research partner, trips all over the seven kingdoms in their pursuit of knowledge, and a child she raised happily as her own, all taking place at the Eternal Library which she and Ulla opened after a brief fight and make up.
Hugo and Ulla both struggled with how to proceed. Do they restore her memories along with a lifetime of trauma or do they allow her to remain blissfully unaware and happy?Hugo and Varian had mommy issues. Ulla struggled with navigating being alive after a decade of isolation, and doors. Donella somehow had the best possible time in this au.

But people left and hearts cracked and as content as she was with the life she created with Hugo, she 'fixed' enough things to know putting a patch over a break was never a permanent solution.
Ulla was used to breaking things. Beakers exploded, goggles scratched, tools rusted beyond repair. She was good at tossing things aside. But some people were harder to forget than others and as happy as her work made her she 'tossed' enough things to know the void inside would ring hollow and hours couldn’t fill it.

Summary
Donella was the first constant in Hugo’s life. She was his boss, his mentor, his mother. The decades after opening the Eternal Library were spent trying to make up for lost time. And they did. She was happy and he was too. For as long as he could remember she was taking care of him, even if it was in her own way.
As the years passed, he began caring for her too- despite her protests. Hugo knew there was nothing he could do to possibly repay her, but staying by her side through it all was a good place to start. With him, she’d never be alone again- unless she wanted the peace and quiet. He would have given anything to have more time with her, but time seemed to be the one thing they could only lose.
