Summary
Team management e-mails him early in the afternoon, but it’s just after helping Jackie feed Ruby and Jade dinner, when Hayden has the chance to go to the bedroom and sit against the bed headboard, that he manages to see and read it. The language is polite but friendly, and the person writing it actually identifies herself as the lady from the team’s media relationship, Nathaly, which immediately makes the exchange feel more real. She calls Hayden by his first name too, which also helps. Hayden has read some official communication before, but they addressed the team as a whole, so he knows this is different. Nathaly is talking to him to know if there’s any way he might billet for next season.

Ilya's pulse jumped, hard and sudden in his throat. The mug slipped from his hand, not falling but landing too heavily on the counter, coffee slopping over the rim. He set it down properly, his movements mechanical, and forced himself to read the rest of the headline:

He’s jolted out of his quasi-meditation by the clatter of a case beside him. He cracks an eye open, squinting up at the figure towering over him.
“Oh good,” the boy says, cocking his head to one side. “You are not dead. I was going to call police.”
Shane blinks, then blinks again. He knows that face, that curly hair, that accent. He’s seen it plastered over boards in Montreal, watched videos of it on YouTube when he can’t sleep at night. Ilya Rozanov. Shane shuffles his feet, then freezes, not knowing whether to stand up and shake his hand or if that will make it weird. Instead, he just blinks at him as Ilya’s smirk widens. Shit. Now he’s definitely made it weird.
“Oh,” Ilya nods knowingly. “You are one of these…how you say?…idiot savants, yes? I know. Is hard to have conversation when your head is so full of boring.”
