This is what they used to do when they were still long-distance, hole up in a bedroom and fuck until the pictures fell off the walls. But they’ve been living together in their gorgeous new Manhattan apartment for- eight months, now? Eight heavenly months of all the Justin he could ever want, Justin painting in low morning sunlight and flopped on the couch watching shitty TV and tossing a salad in a weird thrift-store bowl he’d insisted they buy. And yet, Brian still craves him constantly; he gets home from work and eats him up from the inside out and winds up on his knees before they’ve even started dinner half the time. There was nothing special about this weekend.

Brian sat there for a moment wondering how this was actually his life and why he was being punished with this godawful conversation. And then, in his peripheral vision, he caught Cynthia shuffling through a stack of the photos Justin had posed for earlier. Even seeing a photo of the kid fully clothed had Brian's blood racing again. Fuck, he really wanted to see Justin again. And keep seeing him. Enough to actually date him though, just because he didn't want to give up the sex?

"I can't sleep with you because my body count is already too high," Justin blurts out. His cheeks burn when Brian doesn't respond, just stares at him incredulously.
"Body count?" Brian repeats at last. "Are you an assassin?"
"No, I mean like -"
"I know what you mean," Brian interrupts. "I'm just wondering why you'd waste time worrying about something like that."
Justin scowls at him, feeling more embarrassed than ever. "I'm not worrying, per se. It's just that...I'd like to get married someday, and I'd rather focus on finding my future husband than on one-night stands."
"And how are you going to do that?" Brian asks, sounding very amused, which just makes Justin blush even more. “If you can't sleep with anyone else, I mean? You're just going to stay celibate until marriage? Even if it takes years?"
Justin opens his mouth to retort, and then falls silent, realizing he doesn't have an answer for that. He hasn't really thought that far ahead.

The second Laura leaves the room, Justin lets out a huge breath and sinks back down into his chair.
"What's up with you?" Daphne asks, frowning. "You were acting weird the entire time the clients were here."
"Yeah, that's because I've fucked one of the clients."
Daphne's eyes widen. "Seriously? Brian? When?"
"Last night."
Daphne's jaw drops. She looks so stunned that it would have been comical in any other situation, but right now Justin has never felt less like laughing. Actually he kind of wants to throw up.
"So the guy you were just telling me about...the guy who fucked you until 4 A.M. last night...that's our client. Our client whose wedding you're going to be working on."
"Yup. Seriously, Daphne, how is this my life? I mean, honestly, what are the chances?"
"I know," Daphne murmurs, "it's like a movie."

Carlos's heart is pounding. He can barely hear over the blood rushing in his ears or see through the fog clouding his mind. Because he knows those eyes. He knows the hand he just shook, and the voice he just heard, although it’s lower and richer than it was over a decade ago, when the man he’d just met was called TK instead of Tyler. He doesn’t know how or why TK is here, in Austin, a lifetime after circumstance ripped them apart and spread miles between them. He doesn’t know how or why the Tyler they’ve been tracking all these months has turned out to be Carlos’s childhood friend, to this day his most cherished relationship, his first heartbreak. He doesn’t know how or why any of this has happened, but it has. He’s completely sure of it. TK – Tyler – didn’t seem to recognize him. But that face is burned into his memory.

Summary
Carlos is certainly aware of TK Strand. He wasn’t aware the man had cycled through quite this many teams before being traded to the Dallas Stars. His reputation as a hot-head and a trouble-maker precedes him, but there are dozens of players like that in this league. Carlos has never considered Strand to be significantly worse than any of the rest of them, but maybe he just wasn’t paying close enough attention. The person described in the article he just read doesn’t exactly sound like someone Carlos should be thrilled about having as a new teammate.

Sparks and splashes fly when TK and Carlos each take up swimming while they recover from workplace injuries.

Carlos touches the shallow end of the pool and stops, allowing himself the time to look back. Appearing slightly fuzzy and gleaming through Carlos’ goggles, TK sits on the edge at the deep end, palms splayed flat on the tiles, legs dangling in the water and kicking softly. He raises a hand, waving to beckon Carlos back. There’s something so sweet about the gesture, Carlos’ stomach flutters. He has to stop himself from smiling as he swims towards TK. He peers through his goggles at the sharpening sight of TK’s feet under the water, the way he moves them in a circular motion. Carlos keeps his head under and grabs TK’s foot playfully. TK howls, elated.
“I knew you were going to do that, and it still scared me,” TK says, his voice squeaky through his rolling laughter.
Suddenly it feels to Carlos like he’s known TK forever – like they’re best friends from school days, kids at play.
TK kicks up, splashing water over Carlos’ shoulder. There’s a hunger in his eyes that Carlos tries to mirror. They hold it for a few seconds before they have to look away. -

Summary
Everything about TK makes him forget. But then it all comes back to him slowly, not unlike a spark to kindling, leaving Carlos swallowing down his grief like the fire it is—trying to consume it all by himself so he’s the only one who feels the burn.
He glances out the half-open window, and sees the white dots of birds drifting on the low tide, and he wonders how he’s supposed to leave it all. The salty air, the pleasant sun, the way TK walks without a line of tension in his shoulders. He knows they’ve transcended all different sorts of honeymoon phases since they gave their relationship a real go a few years ago; he knows that they’ll still be them once Owen picks them up from Austin-Bergstrom and they go home to the loft and work and responsibilities and Lou II. But he doesn’t know how he’s supposed to go back to a life without his father.

Or, Carlos tries to keep his grief to himself on the honeymoon.
