Mental silence fell between them—Charles was still there, drifting carefully in the center of Erik’s thoughts, but he was thinking, guarding the quiet metronome of his thoughts from Erik.
What if this doesn’t work? Charles asked, uncertain.

“I can’t believe I decided even for a second that it was a good idea,” Charles sighs, every word that leaves his mouth a complete, unfiltered truth.
The library is empty of students and awash in warm sunlight of the early spring, which would make this Sunday afternoon feel downright idyllic, if it wasn’t for… well, for a whole lot of things.
Erik, who’s figuring out where to put his helmet so he doesn’t stand there clinging to it, gripes: “Oh, I can,” which, given that he’s also currently afflicted by the serum, hey. As if it’s not the ‘Let’s Throw a Baseball Field at the White House’ person speaking. He slams the helmet on one of the bookshelves safely out of Charles’s reach—not that Charles would touch that thing with a ten foot pole, thank you very much—and turns back to Charles with an unimpressed expression.
The fact that Erik is here, at the school, in the first place, having chosen the very day of the first serum testing and the exact lab Hank and Charles were using to do precisely that, says a lot about Charles’s luck and lack thereof.
