“Please don’t do this with me,” Dustin cut in, swallowing thickly. Mike tried to ignore the pain in the other boy’s voice, but that didn’t stop a voice of his own deep down telling him that he’d fucked everythig up again.
“Dustin—”
“Don’t make me go through this again,” he said, quieter. The firmness in his voice had vanished, replaced by desperation and vulnerability. Dustin rarely spoke like that, usually opting for a more assertive voice, but that assertiveness had shifted into something softer. Mike could feel tears brimming in his eyes, because at least real dead people had the grace of not being able to hear someone pleading for their life. Mike, who only felt like he was dead and rotting, still had to be torn apart by caring words, and that was torturous.
A few months after the destruction of the Upside Down, Mike still hasn’t moved on from everything. On the daily, he finds it harder to climb out of bed. When he finds himself imagining death at Sattler’s Quarry, he doesn’t expect Dustin to find him, in the same spots they were in almost five years before.

She saw his dark hair when walking down the street, his eyes in her neighbour’s sons, his cheek bones in her own face when she looked in the mirror. Nancy saw his photo, tens of them, piled up like a crude imitation of grief on the table next to her fathers La-Z-boy. She was staring at them now and could swear that little five-year-old Mike’s eyes were staring back at her. He looked innocent in that photo. Happy. But really, who is she to make that assumption? She didn’t even realise when her baby brother wanted to kill himself.

Summary
The thing that Dustin never realized was that Mike was the glue to the party. When Will had left for California, the party still stood, when he was at summer camp, the party still stood, and when Lucas was gone for basketball practice, the party still stood. When it broke up from Max and El, it still stood strong because it was Mike who held them together. He had said that at his funeral, that despite everything they’d gone through, all their struggles and turmoils, Mike held them together because that’s who he was.
It was woefully ironic that the one person who had to be out of Hawkins when the Upside Down came back was killed in California by a government agent.

After Vecna split the earth beneath Hawkins, nothing has been the same. Will's sensitivity to the Upside Down is stronger than ever, Dustin and Lucas are consumed with grief, and Mike and El are not speaking.Then, Mike falls under Vecna's curse, and the party discovers that his way out of the trance is not through song but through his oldest friend, who is hopelessly in love with him. To be safe, everyone decides it's best if Will does not let Mike out of his sight for the foreseeable future.

He remembers his Mom telling Ted Wheeler to calm down, that he was going too far – but she didn’t protest too much. Mike had run up to his room right after, forgetting the glass of water he had originally meant to get.
I won’t have a freak of nature living in my house, he curls up and sobs as another stab of pain flows through him, I’ll tie him to a post outside and let someone take him.
Or: Mike Wheeler presents as an Omega and promptly decides no one else can know. It doesn't matter that it's killing him, or that Will presents as an Alpha and Mike wants nothing else but be his. He can't let anyone know he's anything but a Beta, so he decides to take his suppressants and be content with pining from afar. This comes back to bite him in the ass in quite a spectacular fashion.

"Mike?" Will asks, jaw dropped open in bewilderment, hand still clutching the door knob.
The Mike standing in front of him is wearing a rickety jacket that almost swallows his thin frame entirely, and has his arms curled around himself, his shoulders hunched. His hands play with his sleeves as if nervous. His body is trembling. And it's the state of his body that really makes Will's blood run cold in horror.
There are bruises all over Mike's face. The black eye he has is stark against the whiteness of his skin, reminding Will of drops of dark paint on a blank canvas. His lip is busted, and Will can see traces of dried blood on him. And most noticeably, he has a ring of bruises around his neck, in the shape of hands.
Upon seeing Will at the door, Mike's expression simultaneously lightens and crumples.
"Will." He croaks out, desperation and vulnerability clear in his shaky voice.
After not speaking nor seeing eachother for 5 years, Mike suddenly turns up at Will's door, bruised and bloodied.
