Summary
Sheriff Merlin Emrys is the only lawman in the old west town of Griffin Creek, Montana. He wears the badge of his father, Balinor, murdered seven years earlier. Standing over his father's grave, he'd made a solemn vow to bring his killers to justice. Despite his strong suspicion that Uther Pendragon, a wealthy rancher and the leader of the notorious Pendragon Gang, was involved, Merlin lacks the evidence to arrest him.
When he is informed that the Pendragon Gang is heading for Griffin Creek, the sheriff knows he must protect the people of his town. Alone, he confronts the gang as soon as they ride into town, only to discover that they are no longer led by Uther, but by his son. Merlin finds himself inexplicably drawn to Arthur Pendragon, despite knowing his gang was wanted for everything from cattle rustling, to robbing banks, to saloon brawls, and even murder. He soon discovers that Arthur is nothing like his father, and Arthur begins to question everything from his own heart to his father's legacy. As their relationship grows, the bond between lawman and outlaw becomes one of legends.

It is foretold, as the Great Dragon says, that the destiny of a great kingdom rests on the shoulders of a young boy. Merlin, said to be the most powerful sorcerer in history, is an absolute idiot. Truly, there is no limit to his stupidity. But, when his foolishness puts the life of his mentor and friends on the line, it seems the best solution is self-sacrifice.

The anticipation was the worst. All day, Merlin felt restless, to the point that Gaius banished him from his chambers after he dropped a vial for the third time. Arthur wasn’t faring much better. He had been so distracted during the knights’ training that he lost against one of his men who was usual far inferior to him in skills. The bruise to his ego matched the one he had received on his ribs.
“My father requested my presence this evening. Go stay with Gwen and Morgana, I don’t want you to be alone when Aredian arrives.”
Despite his anxiety, Merlin found himself grinning, falling back to the ease of their banter. “It almost sounds like you care about me,” he said, earning a cuff to the back of his head.
