Their abilities became tied to the cycle of the year. There would be one season at which their power was at its peak and another where it lay almost dormant. Separating his consciousness from his body like this was starting to become a habit, and it was getting easier and easier, if not less strenuous. Melting into the diffuse plane of pure magic meant a certain relinquishing of control; manipulating the magic in this state was not conducive to precise results, it was more like shaping it into the vague idea of his intent. This time, however, he was not aiming to manipulate anything, just to discover.
The blazing bond between himself and Arthur shone brighter and stronger than ever, and it was child’s play to simply follow that connection and let his consciousness seep into the glowing shape that was Arthur. Oh. The feeling that welcomed him as he did so felt like…home. He knew this energy and it knew him, enveloping him in a warm embrace made warmer still by something small and glowing at the centre—something he had not sensed being there before, yet it felt neither new nor foreign.
He sent out a wordless question to this little ember at the core of Arthur’s being, brushing up against it in greeting, and the moment he touched it it flared up into something bigger and brighter, only calming down as he withdrew a little bit, but even then he could sense that it was slowly expanding of its own accord, sending out little tendrils of curiosity like a seed germinating and growing roots.

The sky is covered in rain clouds. Dark and heavy they hang from the heavens, promising muddy shoes and clammy skin.
Tonight is the night.Merlin takes a deep breath and smells the life within the air. It won’t be long until this same breeze will smell of death and blood. Instead of laughter or silent anticipation, he will hear the screams of his slaughtered enemies and tend to the wounds of his men. It will smell like victory. It will be the end of a century-old war.
