Arthur had often grown wary of fangs with callous words and sharp remarks. He skilled himself in hiding discolored bruises with the scent of pride, and hesitation with a perfected smile.
A king could not let a mere bite befall him or even a tear to grace his eye, and a king he would one day be. He was taught well of his duties. How to set an example, be the better of the greatest men.
So, when Arther Pendragon was informed of the king’s death, he only stilled within his bed. A stunned gasp caught in his throat, his hooded eyes downturn to stare at the sheets beneath him…

Summary

Arthur pressed his ear right to the gap, straining to hear. His every nerve was on fire, every instinct screaming at him not to miss a single word and his pulse was deafening in his ears.

Summary
Everything in their life was so much better.
Camelot was safe, magic wasn’t banned anymore. The happiest people from this repeal of the ban were Morgana and Merlin, they didn’t have to hide themselves anymore. With Uther’s death, Arthur had decided to repeal the ban and since then they were trying to make Camelot better together. Merlin was court sorcerer now; he wasn’t a servant anymore. He loved being more important in the castle, but also, he missed seeing Arthur every minute. Because he was busier, they weren’t spending much time together anymore. It wasn’t doing any good to Merlin’s heart, but at least they were all safe. He didn’t have to try to save Arthur’s life all the time, his king was safe from all the evil beings now. But, why was he feeling like something was wrong, then?
In other words, Arthur is hurting and Merlin doesn't know what to do.

Arthur has an obligation to the crown, even though his father makes it very clear outside of the public eye that Arthur has no knack for ruling. Caught between the insistence of his duty and his own undeniable failing as a prince, Arthur has been slowly dying inside for years, quietly looking for a way to escape his own life. Out among the people of Camelot, "keeping up appearances" looks like training, hearing petitions, and attending tournaments. In his own chambers, it looks like berating his manservant, at times with a sense of humor, and at other times with a cruel edge he never intended. Arthur's manservant, though, seems to have his own thoughts on what Arthur can and should be to the people of Camelot, and passion enough to fight Uther himself.

His father had gotten in contact with him, and said he wanted to meet up for dinner and talk. Arthur didn't want to but he felt he probably should. Maybe he had changed? He wanted Merlin to come with him, but didn't ask because he already felt like such a drain on him that he didn't want to ask for even more, despite just how much he wanted Merlin with him. But in all honesty he wanted Merlin with him all the time.

Merlin, Leon, Gwaine, Morgana, Gaius, Gwen, and Lancelot wake up in a strange place, lost in a mist and fog. They find Arthur, kneeling with his great golden wings spread out behind him, froze completely in thick ice. It is revealed that during the battle between Arthur and Morgana triggered ancient spell. They are now trapped in Arthur's mind, watching the King's memories, until they understand who he really is. But the past, especially Arthur's, is not a pretty one to behold.
"It's what he wants, right?" Merlin whispered. He stood, his hand slipping away from Arthur's cold frozen statue and immediately wishing to go back. The warlock crept forward, the horrid screeches still calling to them from behind the tall wooden door, "We can't leave until the spell is complete, can we? I- I will always stand by Arthur's side. Nothing I see could change that."
Gaius stared at Merlin, a thousand worries and thoughts whirling behind his eyes.
"Arthur has been through a lot of pain in his life. Can you bear to witness that? I'm not sure I can. Not again," the physician's voice cracked guiltily.
"Arthur deserves to be seen. No matter how ugly the past is, I will not deny him that," Merlin replied.
