He’d carried Charles the whole way back, barely speaking. Now the pilot lay propped against a cot, boots off, pant leg cut away to expose the ugly break and dried blood. Henry knelt beside him, sleeves rolled up, hands already slick with antiseptic and effort. A tray sat nearby: gauze, scissors, a tin of salve, a needle threaded and ready. “Hold still.”
Charles winced as Henry pressed a clean cloth against the wound along his side. The blood had clotted into thick, colored patches, but the skin beneath was torn and raw, black around the edges. Henry dabbed gently, soaking away the dried remnants. “Damn,” Charles hissed. “You used to be gentler.”
