It shouldn't be a surprise, really, if the knights think punching each other in the arm is a viable and efficient way of cheering each other up, that they also think insulting each other is a perfectly good way to show affection. Insults are compliments, threats are reassurances, and actual bodily harm is considered good manners or at the very least the mark of genuine companionship. Basically, take everything Merlin's ever been taught about how you actually treat the people you care about and flip it on its head, because stars know that if any one of these men actually behave as though being nice won't incinerate them, the world will actually end.
Alright, maybe he's being a bit harsh.

Mordred had gotten what he had wanted.
He had spread his hatred, his death and his destruction, killing and tearing down those that were in his way to the throne. He had slain countless of innocents including Ygraine, a loss that lay heavy inside of Arthur’s chest. He was barely holding on since his return to the world of the living he was sure that soon he was going to break. However, he was not going to let anyone see, he had to be strong, he had to be stoic and he had to be brave. He was Arthur Pendragon, the supposed King of a broken kingdom and supposed king of a dying race. The weight was on his shoulders and he did not have time to stop and think. If he did that, he probably will never return to his feet again. At least not whole.

“I guess you don’t,” the man grinned, his tone of voice verging on irritating. “You will just have to trust me.”
“That sounds like a mistake.”
“More than this?” the man gestured to the stocks. Arthur could feel something slimy sliding down his forehead threatening to drip into his eye. The man removing this delicately, the tips of his fingers caressing Arthur’s skin in the process. The pair staring at each other for an intense second. Arthur’s heart squeezing in his chest though he didn’t know why. There was something about this man, something that was familiar but so new at the same time. It had been a long day, that was all.
“Fair enough,” Arthur sighed moving his head to the side to allow the man’s hand to fall away that had been lingering. “I err…Might have punched Prince Mordred.”Series
