Instantly alert, adrenaline flooding through him, Arthur’s body automatically moved in time with his thoughts, his hand fisting around the handle of the knife before his mind registered that the intruder was talking.
“Arthur, stop- it’s me, it’s Percival-” Arthur’s mind registered the voice and he dropped the knife, thankfully before he reached phase three. He bolted upright as Percival’s hands fell off his shoulders, leaving him only able to guess where his knight was in the dark.
“Percival- what’re you doing here?” He flung off the covers and swung his feet over the edge, the panicked adrenaline slowly ebbing from his veins, leaving him with only a clear head. He reached for the scarlet shirt on the bedside table. Percival wouldn’t have woken him unless it was important.
“We weren’t sure what else to do, Sire, it’s Merlin.”
Important, indeed.

Summary
Merlin feels overburdened and under the weather, but he doesn't want to add stress to Arthur's efforts in revitalizing his kingdom after recovering the throne from Morgana, so he tries not to take it personally when Arthur gives him a hard time. But when reports tell of a dragon within Camelot's borders and Merlin gets dragged along on a mission against his nature, the king only seems to double down on his mistreatment of his servant, making protecting the royal clotpole a lot more difficult as he fights off an untreated fever.
"Any time he felt as though he was getting somewhere with his destiny something would come around and ruin it. And more often than not, that something was Arthur."
AU where Arthur knows that Merlin used magic to help him recover his kingdom from Morgana in The Sword in the Stone. Only, Merlin doesn't realize.

Arthur lowered the scroll onto his lap and peered over at the child, curious and maybe a little offended. “Why not?”
Merlin shrugged. “You don’t sound like a king, for one.”
“And pray tell, Merlin, how is a king supposed to sound?”
“I don’t know,” he muttered. “Strong. Powerful.” Suddenly Merlin sat up straight, puffing his chest out and pinching his face into a rugged scowl. His voice pitched low, sounding odd in his young body. “My name’s Arthur Pendragon,” he imitated theatrically.
Arthur couldn’t help his amused snort at his antics. “Wrong," he said, returning to the scroll. "A king doesn’t have to say his name, the people would already know it.”
Merlin smiled, a teasing gleam in his eyes. “A good king doesn’t,” he mumbled under his breath, obviously still intending for Arthur to hear.
“The only reason I don’t ‘sound like a king’ is because I have to put up with all your insolence.”
That gloating smile grew on Merlin’s lips and Arthur knew he was going to lose this battle. “A good king wouldn’t put up with that either.”

Summary
Life in Camelot has been hard after Morgana's betrayal, but when new snow covers the fields and the castle halls get a little too stuffy, Merlin convinces Arthur to go on a trip to unwind in the wintry beauty. Little does he know that since it's the Winter Solstice, his magic is significantly weakened, leaving him with no protection when bandits attack them. Worse, a snowstorm arrives, cutting them away from Camelot and any proper medical equipment.
Now, it is up to Arthur and the knights to save Merlin and make sure he stays warm.

Summary
Uther has arranged for visiting dignitaries to have their chance to court the Lady Morgana. Morgana would rather it was Arthur being courted.
Among the visitors are a certain Prince Steve Harrington of Loch Nora and his Bard.
Prince Steve is the top ranked for Morgana's hand in Uther's opinion, The Harringtons are an old family and their son is kind and brave, even if his Bard 'must' go everywhere with him. Every Prince is allowed one vice, he supposes.
Steve is the new heartthrob of Camelot, but seems as reluctant to be carted around like cattle as Morgana is. She likes him. And Merlin seems to get on very well with the Prince's Bard, Eddie, much to Arthur's chagrin.Misunderstandings lead to what Arthur never realised he longed for.

"Why do you stick around working for Prince Arthur if he annoys you so much?" Eddie asks, not unkindly, legs swinging, chin resting on the top of his lute.
Merlin thinks for a second, "Well...I suppose, Arthur and I are - have become - sort of...friends."
Eddie's face changes and a smirk overtakes his features, half hopeful, half knowing.
"Ohhh...yeah, me and Steve are kinda 'friends' too."Or
