During his nightmares, his magic goes off, causing destruction, and at times, death even. One night during his long awaited peaceful dream, he meets Dream of the Endless. Morpheus tells him that he causes damages in the Waking World, and offers to take the nightmare away. To his surprise, Merlin refuses.

When Merlin insists on going through ancient ruins that have previously brought him to his knees in pain, he asks for Mordred's assistance in swallowing poison, allowing him to communicate with the Gods. He reluctantly agrees, watching warily and with immense guilt as his friend collapses in front of everyone.
"This will stop my heartbeat," He says pointing to the bowl of leaves, that weren't quite fully ground up yet. "And that," He motions to the vial Mordred's still holding. "Should bring me back to life."
"It should, or it will?" He asks.

When Camelot is hosting an archery contest Merlin decides to enter for a bit of easy money, and enlists the help of Lancelot to sweeten the pot for both of them. Who would think the two kindest people in the whole kingdom would swindle everyone there out of all their gold.
"You said he couldn't shoot!" One of the knights shouts.
Lancelot shrugs. "I had to make sure you would bet against him somehow."
"Unbelievable." Arthur comments. "You two swindled everyone here!"
"It was nothing personal." Merlin clarifies.

Sick of hurting people physically, Merlin starts to mess with them psychologically, banishing anyone who tries to kill the king from Camelot with a few words. And it works pretty well for a while, until Arthur witnesses something he shouldn't.
"Did you really think you could fool me?" Merlin asks. "I can feel your magic."
"What?"
"It's strong." He whispers quietly. "But mines stronger." His voice is deep unattached, and dripping with malice. When he pulls back to look at the man's face it's gone pale, and he notes the familiar look of recondition as it hits him. "Recognize me now?" He asks.
