This fic pretty much fills every spot on my Merlin bingo card (warning, as my bingo card can sometimes be spoilerish):
* Merthur
* Merlin in distress
* Arthur to the rescue
* Arthur discovers Merlin is magic
* Gwaine is Merlin's friend (as seen on TV!)
* Lancelot is Merlin's friend (as seen on TV!)
* Arthur and Merlin discover that maybe they like each other rather a lotMy favorite part, aside from the fact that it's distressingly well-written and is a beautifully done H/C without being overly saccharine, is how Thursday Next utilizes the fact that _Gwaine and Lancelot are Merlin's friends first_ and displays that to great effect.
Gwaine's worry and subsequent anger with Arthur is altogether believable, because the original show itself made a point of underlining how his friendship with Merlin comes first in his priorities (Eye of the Phoenix, S3E08: G: "I'm here for the same reason as you. To help out a friend." M: "Arthur's lucky to have us." G: "Not Arthur. You."), and it makes Arthur's realization of his feelings for Merlin all the more poignant. Because finally, *finally* Arthur realizes what's been readily apparent to everybody else (especially Gwaine and Lancelot): how very special Merlin is, and not just because he's magic; but because he's loyal, brave, self-sacrificing, loving, lovable, and just about the best friend - or lover - a person could have.

One of my favorite of Giselleslash's many wonderful Merthur fic. She truly is the Nora Ephron of Merlin fic. Copy-pasting my comment (spoilers):
Merlin and Arthur are both so believably and relatably vulnerable in this story. Merlin's desire to, essentially, get the mistakes out of the way in a safe situation so that he can nail it with his "true love" is something I'm fairly sure a lot of us more romantically awkward people can relate to (I definitely can!). Arthur's desire to protect himself (because for all his apparently shallow nature, his heart is large enough to encompass the entire world and so much more, but all the more fragile for it) is also utterly human. Romance is, at its core, the most thrilling and frightening experience a person can go through. The risk of pain is terrifying. It's what makes both of their agreeing to participate in their "fake" relationship all the more believable and realistic, as they slowly, unwittingly let down their walls (because in such situations, how could one really expect to keep their walls up?) and let their hearts thrive.
Your ability to convey their vulnerabilities in what could otherwise be a rather trope-ish premise (fake boyfriend for reasons; they fall in love) is what makes this story transcend the trope and become something truly poignant, breath-taking, and memorable. You take these characters and flesh them out subtly, and make us fall in love with them as they fall in love with each other, neither realizing or daring to admit that that is, in fact, what they are doing. And when they part, your heart breaks, because you know, even if they don't, that their clinging to perceived "truths" is preventing them from realizing that they are each other's true love.
Mm, I just love this story so much. You just have a natural gift for making incredibly relatable and lovable characters and imbuing them with warmth. Your dialogue is at once hilarious, witty, and realistic; nothing ever feels like it's being said for show or just because something clever popped into your head and you wanted to make a character say it. It always just sounds like something the character would say in that situation, and that's just wonderful. I love your voices.
